I wonder what winnersdontusedrugs voted for, when this one went against Gunstar Heroes in the Console Wars. This game is one of my favorites of all time, hands down, the gameplay is simply perfection, I love all the gameplay mechanics of the game, the exploration, the one vs. one boss battles, the soundtrack, the level design, the art design, and the plot. Capcom really went all out to make this game nothing less than stellar. I was playing it on my Super Nintendo Classic and this is without a doubt one of the best looking 16 bit games of that generation. I love all three Super Nintendo games. Usually the first one in a trilogy tends to be significantly weaker, but not in this case, the Mega Man X series started strong from the start. X4, and X5 are great as well, and I have nothing against X6. I'm happy people will have the chance to experience the entire series again with the Mega Man X Collection announced for this year. And if we are getting Mega Man 11 this year too we may end up getting a proper Mega Man X9 sooner or later as opposed of prototypes like Mighty No. 9, that had decent gameplay, but poor production value. So far the Azure Strike Gunvolt series had been the closest thing from Inti Creates to what Mega Man X represents. I recommend them they are great games, but nothing beats having Rockman and Zero as your main characterers.

I really enjoyed the original Mega Man X when it game out. The dashing and wall climbing provided a nice change in gameplay, while keeping the excellent platforming of its predecessors.
I find I actually quite like collecting the heart containers for extra life, and those who want an extra challenge can avoid them. Same with collecting the E-Tanks and armour pieces.
The character designs were great, and having the maverick bosses based on animals instead of being just _____man was a nice way to set the series apart from its roots.
The Maverick Hunter X remake on the PSP is a fantastic update. It was a shame we only got one.

Wow, it's not Street Fighter! Nice choice. Mega Man X is one of the best platformers ever.

One of the better Super Nintendo games, looks fairly good, plays relatively well, has some good music, some memorable levels, bosses and other stuff, I especially enjoy the big mech suits you can hop into and wreck some additional havoc with, overall a pretty good game.
I prefer the 3D PSP Maverick Hunter X remake myself.

Also, there's hadokens in it... I no longer care much for the Mega Man series as a whole, but taken in the context of its time, X1 was an amazing game. A real showcase for the SNES' capabilities. Could'nt stop playing it in the day... It was soo good I had friends willing to trade Street Fighter 2 with me for it. But truth be told, I never followed up with the sequels. Joined in with my cousin playing parts of X4-6 during the PS1 days, but never really played through any of them myself. I did play X7 however, which was such a dissapointment it turned me off the series completely - haven't bothered with a Mega Man game since... Except for the PSP remake, which I did try... but all the hearts and secret locations were not in the same places anymore, I couldn't be bothered looking for them all over again...

Is it wrong that I like 'X' better than the originals?

Is it wrong that I like 'X' better than the originals? The X ones are easier, more approachable because of the extra gameplay mechanics. People just hate to die so often in the originals, but if you get good at the originals, you probably would end up liking those more. It is the NES Dark Souls effect.

Is it wrong that I like 'X' better than the originals? Me too, mate. It's faster, the characters are more maneuverable (dash, air dash, wall climbing, Zero's air sword attacks from X4 onwards etc.), the levels are more open and scroll simultaneously in every direction etc. I wouldn't say it's objectively "better" because of that, but it's certainly my favourite gameplay style. The Zero series is also great in all those respects but introduced not so good ideas (levels for weapons, convoluted lives and cyber elves systems, new weapons tied to rankings etc.) and was limited by the GBA screen; the ZX series tried to go for a metroidvania style that didn't really mesh well with Mega Man's style of platforming and action. So yes, I'd say the X series is my favourite, X7 notwithstanding.

I have the PSP re-release of this game. When the modern titles left me soft, Megaman (Maverick Hunter) X hardened me right up again with its old school difficulty. I like how completing one level may have an effect on other levels like beating Chill Penguin freezes the molten metal in Flame Mammoth's foundry. I also got a real Astroboy vibe from this game.

I just actually grabbed the PSP remake again, as it was on sale for $3 CDN on PSN this week. Figured I'd play through it on my Vita one of these days.

Megaman X has got to be one of the tightest, most responsive action games ever made. It's part of the reason why I still love to play some of the more questionable entries in the series like X5 or 6, because the core gameplay is so good. The platforming and the shooting blends together so well they feel as if they're one thing. That's why it feels so natural to blast through the game with nothing but the X-buster, which only fires straight, in a game with plenty of vertical level design. As fun as it is playing through the levels though, I think the boss battles steal the show for me, and is one of the aspects that makes me like the X series more than the classic series. Yeah, bosses can be cheesed with their weakness just like in the classic series, but boss encounters become much more memorable when you stop using boss weaknesses (aside from Armored Armadillo). Of course, you can do the same thing in the classic series, but Megaman X relies on less of the pattern recognition required to win in the classic games. The PSP remake is overlooked too. I think the music is a downgrade, but the story, environments, and designs are more fleshed out, and you also get to play hard mode which gives bosses new abilities. Vile being playable is a nice addition too. He has a shitload of cool weapons, the only problem is he controls weird due to not having a dash and they only play one track for every single stage. stratogustavI think I ended up voting for SNES/Megaman X, but that was a tough one for sure.

Great game that I haven't played in a long time, looking forward to the X collection(s?) coming out.
