Haven't played Human Revolution but I've heard it's a great game. One thing that annoys me is that, from what I've heard, you can't pick up & throw bodies like you could in the first two games. You can only drag them along the ground, which is stupid.

Deus Ex 1 & 2 were virtually the only games to get that mechanic right, and they completely botch it in the third game. I'll still probably play Human Revolution eventually though.

I don't dislike it, but having played the first one, it feels somewhat lacking in comparison.
The good things: the action is good, the stealth mechanics are ok, there is enough exploration/sidequests available.
The bad things: the goddamn yellow filter they used gives me headaches (I'm not even joking), it just looks like someone pissed over the screen - well, the graphics in general look subpar for their time, though the same could be said about the original game; the EXP system feels all kinds of unbalanced; the decisions made through the game don't affect much of it (except in a few instances); the hub areas feel cramped; the level design is bad, in my opinion; the bosses are badly implemented (the first one especially is just a "tank" kind of enemy and doesn't fit a stealth kind of game). Also, the entire last section is terrible.
My main problem with it is the level design. The first game gave you a very open situation and let you improvise how to approach it (to mention a similar modern example, think of MGS V: TPP); in Human Revolution, it seems the developers thought "hey, in this series, the player needs multiple ways to approach every situation, so let's implement them!" - instead of feeling improvisational, it just seems like you have multiple railroaded paths: you clearly see a hackeable door, a vent right on top of it and a breakable wall by its side, so you know that those are your obvious three choices of how to approach the problem. Most terribly, the game gives you EXP points for taking each alternative, so what I usually ended up doing (and probably most players) was to just take them all: hack the door, break the wall, then crawl through the vents.
When I finished the first game, I immediatelly wanted to play it again to try different things; when I finished Human Revolution, I had practically taken every route in every level and my character was a specialist in everything. The developers of the original weren't afraid of locking things that you would only see on a second playthrough (if you took different decisions and upgrades), while Human Revolution absolutely wanted you to do and see everything the first time. It felt too limited in that regard.
Also, I hated the story and its characters. For all that, I'm giving this game a 3 - it's not bad, but I could never bring myself to replay it, as everything felt just average.

Kind of sad to hear you hate/heavily dislike it. I respect your opinions, but I'm just going to address some of your points with my own opinions to further discuss the game. I thought the yellow/gold filter really set this game apart from other games and I loved it. It gave the game a Noir feeling. It's a shame they dropped it Mankind Divided. I remember buying this when it came out, and the graphics weren't bad back then. The facial animations are very good compared to what was out back then. It camw out in 2011, which is a long time ago. The cutscenes have aged poorly though. They look very plasticy. Adam Jensen is a cool character with a wicked voice actor. You can't deny that he is pretty iconic. "I never asked for this". As for the bosses, yes, it kind of ruined the stealth approach. Fortunately, that got fixed in the Director's Cut, which is not a great excuse, but at least they did something.

Balder - I don't hate it, though; the exploration, stealth, the dialog options are all very cool; the action is responsive and not too bad... And I have a thing for cyberpunk, so I'm always inclined to like these games. It's just that the gameplay feels like a "fanfic" of the first game, instead of an official prequel - its like a very dedicated fan tried to replicate it without properly understanding how it worked. I do agree that Adam Jensen turned out pretty iconic, even the corniness of his lines (like the "Never asked for this" one) turned out great... More or less like JC Denton in the original ("A bomb!"). The developers certainly nailed the narm-charm that is part of this series. Edit: I'll never forgive the piss-filter, though.

I just prefer the way it handled body manipulation.

I'll never forgive the piss-filter, though. It's the technology you ***** ! ( ) Full disclosure - Out of the entire Deus Ex franchise, I've only ever played through Human Revolution to completion (despite having access to the rest of the series - original, Invisible War, Mankind Divided - all physically on disc in case), so I can't in all honesty compare it to the acclaimed first game based on personal experience. I did give the original Deus Ex a go right after completing Human Revolution... but could never get into it beyond the tutorial level... Honestly it hasn't aged that well and couldn't really sustain my interest - mores the pity...
Although to be completely truthful, I was am waiting on a possible remake of the original to hit modern consoles, one more in line with the new canon and taking details of Jensen's story into greater account. Plus with the advent of Mankind Divided, putting off playing the first might have been a good idea afterall, despite being borne out of procrastination more than anything else... Most terribly, the game gives you EXP points for taking each alternative, so what I usually ended up doing (and probably most players) was to just take them all: hack the door, break the wall, then crawl through the vents. And beat up the bad guys. This is very true I have to agree. I exploited it myself. Also, I hated the story and its characters. For all that, I'm giving this game a 3 - it's not bad, but I could never bring myself to replay it, as everything felt just average. But this not so much. I was quite impressed with the story's presentation and Jensen really grew on me. The human drama portrayed and acted out here was leagues ahead of what they could manage in the early 2000s with the first, as revolutionary as it was (puns sort of intended). Plus that soundtrack was a killer - just watching that old trailer still gives me goosebumps. What's more, my personal head canon has Human Revolution being the logical evolution of and occuring in the very same world as Metal Gear - what with all the jazz about cybernetics and private militaries - 9 years after the events of Revengeance. Hey it fits!

My brother likes stealth games and he said these games are boring. I believe him, but I still bought the one for the PS4. It was like 5 bucks at some flash sale, and I thought why not. I haven't play it yet, but apparently is on 4K with HDR. So at least it should look pretty. I'm not into stealth myself, so this was one of those impulsive purchases that was a waste. Maybe I'll give it a try just to not say I wasted the 5 dollars.
