I'd like to see everyone stating when was the last time they saw the original.

few months ago, it's okay, I rated it 3/5, it's never been a favorite but I can watch it when it's on TV. I like the winter holiday one more, it's been longer since I saw that one though, a couple of years at least.

I don't know what Balder's deal is. I guess I shouldn't be surprised, considering the poor taste he's shown in the past, but a 1 star review for National Lampoon's Vacation is unacceptable. Either you went into it with your expectations way too high or you watched the wrong movie by mistake. Is NL's Vacation the greatest movie ever made? No. I wouldn't even call it the funniest. But it's "alright" at its worst. It is definitely a movie of its time, but I don't think you can hold that against it. Comedy is probably the most subjective genre - if it doesn't make you laugh, what can you do? - but this is not a poorly made film. And John Candy was always great in everything he did. I gave it a 4/5. I can understand a 3/5, but a 1/5 is weak.

This movie has some really lame humor that was funny only (or mostly) to the people at that time. At the worst the humor is so bad that I would like to turn it off. It isn't a poorly made movie, but it isn't technically innovative either. For me, not a single joke had a laugh, and I'm not alone on this. My roommate and his dad tried to watch too some months ago, and he told me they turned it off as the humor was just completely unfunny. So it's not just me or my generation.

Charlie Chaplin movies yes, insanely hilarious, but I just saw The Big Lebowski a couple weeks ago, and even though I won't deny I laughed many times throughout the whole movie, it was nowhere near as funny as something like The Martian for example.

The Martian is one of the most overrated movies of all time. I can't believe it was nominated for Best Picture.

Balder - I'll admit having watched it last time when I was 13. I'm not sure how it would hold up now, but even then I remember Christmas being the better movie. EDIT: Good point on Chaplin and Lebowski. I was watching Chaplin's "The Kid" a few months ago and it was still funny and touching. What a great movie. Though no one can deny Dan E. Kool's point: John Candy is always great, so any movie with him will have at least a few decent scenes. Maybe I should just watch it again one of these days and see for myself how much of it holds up.

Full disclosure: I haven't seen the movie start to finish since I was a kid, either. It's possible that the jokes have aged, but again I'd say that can't be blamed on the movie. Some gags, like the ending Walley World sprint set to Vangelis' Chariots of Fire has been done and redone to the point of cliche, but it was a new joke when the movie was made. Just something to keep in mind.

The Martian is one of the most overrated movies of all time. I can't believe it was nominated for Best Picture. It is one of those movies that is great the first time you watch them, but that's it, just like Interstellar, and Gravity. Excellent movies, but no much replayability. The Martian was the funniest movie I watched that year. I laughed almost all the way through. I was watching Chaplin's "The Kid" a few months ago and it was still funny and touching. What a great movie. One of the best movies of all time. The Kid is a masterpiece. Those kind of movies I don't even compare to other movies because they are on a class of their own.

The Kid is really Chaplin's best work. People say Modern Times, The Dictator or City Lights, but none of those comes close to The Kid. It's short, but wastes no seconds of runtime.
