That epic Shark sounding soundtrack is one of the coolest ever. I always say the sound effects of the arcade games from that era are simply the best. They all feel hyperdimensional and futuristic. It enhances the experience to stellar levels of awesomeness. Sadly, the console versions never give justice to these games. The original arcade ones are truly timeless and fascinating, even on modern displays. Vector graphics, and arcade games in general from the 2nd gen look excellent in ultra high definition displays for some reason. The sequel Asteroids Deluxe is also outstanding. There are aspects of these cabinets that are impossible to replicate on a home console. Like the hologram effect of the vector graphics mirrored on top of the asteroids background. Still though, a PS4 Pro port of the arcade originals would definitely be welcomed. There are some arcade sticks in the market that could actually work well with these games.  |

I've never played the original arcade machine of Asteroids, just a bunch of ports to consoles and PC, but because of all of those I was never a fan of Asteroids, it's one of my least favorite classic retro games.
I'm having trouble deciding if I'd rather play this than Pong but at least Pong can be somewhat enjoyed by two players, so I think even Pong manages to rank higher for me than Asteroids does given a second player is willing to join in. If alone I guess I'd rather play Asteroids if I had to, but to be honest I'd rather not play at all at that point.

In the context of the classic arcade games, I think I would give it a 4, since it would be lower than, let's say, Pac Man. But as far as videogames in general go, it does deserve a 5: it has that abstract quality, coupled with a very easy to understand (but hard to master) gameplay that gives it this aura of something that doesn't age and will always be fun. Something like that deserves a 5 to me.

But you know what else I appreciate is Asteroids.
Used to play this on a desktop PC when I was 5; it was one of my first introductions to video gaming in general. Somehow playing on the PC with arrow keys feels more authentic than playing any home console version, even the Atari Flashback collection one which is near perfect.
It's endlessly playable and has a great concept / layout (the dark screen makes it easy on the eyes). Easy 5 / 5 for me.

If I'm not mistaken, Asteroids was one of the most well known games to use vector graphics. I would love to play the arcade cabinet someday.

Man, where the FUCK is this week's game discussion thread?? I hate to derail this discussion about Asteroids, but for Christ's sake it's now Thursday and Balder still hasn't posted the new discussion yet... Calm down dude. I've been gone for two days. Summer is incredibly frustrating to me due to work as it has been every year during the summer. You throwing a fit every time this happens doesn't lighten my mood either, especially when you express your anger this way. To explain the situation I haven't had time due to work and some personal business. Also, I asked Dan E. Kool to fill in this week. But due to me asking him a little bit late, he hasn't posted it because he's been gone too for the last couple of days. And I don't blame him. He probably has another life too besides the pub. Now, here's what's going to happen: I'll post a game discussion tomorrow and pin it and all that shite. I'll try to be more on time in the future, but no promises. Now, if it happens again, I don't forbid you to talk about games. I never wanted the weekly discussions to kill normal discussions. You most certainly can start a normal discussion thread about any game you'd like. Just saying dude. And as that Russian dude said: "It's only game, why you heff to be mad?" |

It's not fair to me, Stratogustav, or anyone to have their suggested discussion lose its pin so early. Just post the thread this upcoming Tuesday. |
