We have to appreciate PlayStation for trying with their exclusives to lift the weight of Rare changing and eventually disappearing. At least they tried, and that's a good thing.

I love Jak & Daxter, the controls, soundtrack, graphics/atmosphere, and level-design were all gold standard. It gets enough praise for how most of it's world is seamless, but I think Jak & Daxter deserves some more recognition for how it plays. It may not have as much depth as Mario 64, but unlike 64 and other 5th gen collectathons, it controls smooth as butter to this day while still keeping at least some semblance of depth .
It's unfortunate that the game wasn't harder though. Since there were so many power cells to collect even after beating the game, it's a shame that there weren't one or two powercells per area that offered some true challenge and maybe required you to learn some of the more advanced platforming mechanics. Ratchet & Clank is better. Save it for Jak 2 jabroni we're still in the pre-GTA era here, when platformers were cute and cuddly. That means no guns allowed. We should talk about the Ratchet and Clank series some day though because I do think they're excellent games.

I absolutely love the first Jak and Daxter. It just barely beats out Rayman 2 as my second favorite 3D platformer, right below Mario 64 & Sunshine. I never bothered to play the sequels because they looked absolutely terrible and seemed to have nothing in common with how the first Jak and Daxter played, kind of like Banjo Kazooie Nutz n Boltz meets Shadow the Hedgehog; dark, edgy & totally irrelevant. The first Jak on the other hand feels very true to platformers of the 5th gen (the "golden age" of 3D platformers) which is why I love it so much.
Easily a 5/5 for me.

I just read through the entire Encyclopedia Britannica and couldn't find a single pub game discussion on there. I'm pretty sure I updated it. Did you look in the appendix? |

Ratchet & Clank is better. In terms of 3D platforming? Hell nah. Precursor Legacy wipes the floor with all the Ratchet and Clank games when it comes to that. I think Sony is partially to blame for killing the 3D platformer genre by shifting focus away from the platforming aspect with the Ratchet and Clank games and the Jak sequels. A lot of people say Rareware started the decline of the genre with the release of collect-a-thons like DK 64, but Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft are all to blame as well. |
