It may not be the Cutie Honey I am familiar with.. but it's monumentally mindblowingly retarded to the point of being stupidly wildly entertaining, the voice acting is fantastic, giving this any lower than 5/5 should be a criminal offence by internationally recognized law.
Anyway, here's a Commando movie to watch for anyone who's in the business of watching a Commando movie but is unsure of which Commando movie to watch, it has Commando but also Delta and Force making it the superior choice by not a factor of two but of literally three.

That movie looks like it has a lot going on. A lot of good shit going on. Commandos. Delta Force. Fighter jets. Fred Williamson. Pretty bad ass. I skimmed a bit of this weeks movie. Lots of cute looking chicks in this. Will have to watch the rest for self pleasure reasons. |

In 1978, some Japanese bloke called Go Nagai (that's his cameo at 1:11:20) created Cutie Honey, one of the first (if not the first) magical girl manga characters. It was an ecchi ("naughty") comic made for teenage boys, featuring a transformation sequence that involved clothes being torn to shreds, a protagonist that could turn straight women bisexual, and S&M villians.
The 2004 movie, brought by that guy who gave us Neon Genesis Evangelion, tones this down and is somewhat more family friendly, campy super heroine flick packed with fan service, anime-like special effects and 2x speed chase sequences with cute girls being turbo dragged on their butts by other cute girls.
When Honey's not kicking ass and not sneaking around in disguise, she's a ditzy office worker, whose only friend is the old cleaning lady. When her uncle is kidnapped by the superpowered and super cashed-up Panther Claw, she goes on the trail in all manner of disguises.
Cutie Honey is played by then swimsuit model Eriko Sato, who obviously wasn't picked for her acting ability. She an "android" (Try cyborg! She has to be at least partially organic if she can eat food!) who was resurrected by her father with the Air Induction System (ai is "love" in Japanese, get it?), which can transmute or conjure things out of thin air. A system seemingly fueled by carbohydrates. Now that's science!
Despite its lighthearted tone, the movie gets more serious at the middle, with Honey literally melting Scarlet Claw with the power of her fury, to Natsuko's (gradually thawing) coldness and Honey's loneliness, but is uplifted by the visit to Seiji's suite, topped off nicely by the silly karaoke scene. By the end, Honey, Natsuko and Seiji are like family.
There are some head scratchers and flaws, though. When Honey discovers Seiji's been taking lots of happy snaps on her, Seiji and Natsuko suddenly seemingly forget she's there.
Also, casting an old man as Sister Jill is understandable if they wanted her to look more monstrous. Gold Claw was played by a woman, but still butch. But Black Claw? The character was female (used watashi/she pronouns), yet cast a man for the part. This English dub also gave him a male voice actor (or maybe the dubbers thought she was a male character too).
Why, Japan?
Then, we have the battle at the aqua line!
1- When Gold Claw throws her minion up at the bridge, he lands face first. BUT as it zooms out, he's on his back!
2- After honey transforms, she's completely surrounded, then deflecting bullets by a straight line formation of henchmen.
3- As Gold Claw falls into the sea, Uncle is somehow on the tarmac in front of Honey!
Despite its flaws, Eriko Sato was hot. It's a campy, fun, bizarre movie. And the main character was hot too! I give it a 7 out of 10. Did I mention the main character was hot?

You know how anime is typically shown? The big breasted female protagonist that acts all weird and is an outsider to society with her quirky sidekicks. People like me hate that representation of anime, because not all anime is like that. Somehow, I do not know how, but they managed to perfectly translate that into a live action movie. I feel weird watching it. It is like I am watching something dirty or something that I should not be watching. I feel ashamed and disgusted, but most of all I feel cringe. Do I even have to mention the terrible CGI or English dub? I have never watched the anime Cutie Honey, nor will I. This is part of my never ending quest to watch and review every movie discussed on CGR. I like to think back at an old colleague of mine, and think what he would say. When things got crazy and way over his head (which rarely happened), he would say "galhus" (translated: madhouse). And I mumble silently to myself... Galhus." 0.5/5 the lowest score. Ghastly. Just plain shit centipede. Sorry man, but how did you endure this? Second worst CGR recommendation I've got... so far. |

OK, so I watched this movie, and it is such a weird sensation. It is exactly an Anime movie, but with real actors.
It is so strange because you know all that is going on should work fine with Anime artstyle, but for some reason it doesn't work with real actors.
It reminded me of watching Mighty Morphin Power Rangers fighting scenes.
Your mind can't make sense of it, if you look it from an objective perspective, the acting is appropriate to the script, and so are the costumes, settings, and cast.
The main actress has all the characteristics that would represent well her character, but it is basically like communism, it works excellent on paper, but it doesn't translate well to the real word.
If this was a movie made with the anime arstyle they show in between some scenes, it would be at least a 6. Something to watch that is actually OK, and could even get interesting. If on top of that they would add more ecchi stuff, it could easily go as high as an 8 or 9, depending how much ecchi, but for some reason the real life representation of that brings down the score to like a 2.
I don't want to give such a low score because I don't see any issues with the movie. The cast is appropriate, the acting is appropriate, the scenery is appropriate, it just doesn't work.
It was definitely eye opening in the sense that it made me realize Anime style of storytelling can only make sense within the Anime realm, which is something I would have never guessed before, and a very strange thing to realize.
