I didn't know about this game. All I know is EA was a great publisher back then.

Haven't played the original System Shock games in over a decade now I think. They were both good as far as I recall, and I'm fairly sure I remember liking the sequel more than the original. After reading about how the crowdfunded remake had a lot of issues and is on hiatus now I've been thinking about giving the original two games a try again, I just haven't gotten around to it yet.

Balder lol, even less than Unreal? I try to pick games I like that I think some people here have played. The story is probably one of the more well-regarded parts of System Shock 2, although I don't want to go into detail and spoil anything important. Shodan is regarded by many to be one of the best villains in videogames. While I like Shodan, I think "The Many" steals the show for me, easily the most horrifying videogame villain imo. One of my favorite aspects of System Shock 2 has got to be how well they pulled off the RPG elements in union with everything else. The game focuses on 3 main classes, Marine(shooting shit), Navy(science & hacking), and OSA (psi abilities). Once you pick a class, there are also a lot of stats and upgrades that affect your character throughout your playthrough. The game has tons of replay value since you can play through it with different builds, and your experience will be different each time.

There are so many things done right in this game... The story is great (and Shodan predates most of what made Glados famous in the Portal series), the RPG elements are well integrated into the gameplay, the multiple classes and various ways to "solve" most problems give it a lot of replay value and the survival-horror aspects are well done and fit the tone and atmosphere of the game.
This game, along with Thief and Deus Ex, defined a special kind of very deep FPS/RPG genre that thrived on PC in the late 90s/early 2000s but was sadly abandoned by the middle 2000s. When it was tried again with Bioshock, it was already a very watered down experience.
I've heard that the newer Prey game is a worthy successor to it, though.

I've heard that the newer Prey game is a worthy successor to it, though. I haven't played System Shock 2 but I know what you're saying to be true since Bethesda is notorious for doing the same thing with the Elder Scrolls and Fallout series. When Oblivion was released there were an enormous amount of complaints from longtime ES fans about the simplified/streamlined nature of the RPG elements & crafting mechanics, which were seen as "dumbed down". But when Skyrim came out, it made Oblivion look like Dungeons and Dragons in comparison, since Skyrim was exponentially more streamlined than Oblivion due to removing many signature ES aspects like the attributes and spellcrafting features, while heavily streamlining many others aspects, to the point where it was no longer a WRPG and had little in common with the earlier games from a gameplay perspective. Fallout 3 and especially 4 have both been heavily criticized for the same reasons, though I have no experience with the Fallout games so I can't personally comment on that matter. Still, fan reception to Fallout 4 alone is enough to have me convinced.
