The F1 series has been one of the longest running series in gaming next to Dirt which is the equivalent to Rally-X.
Namco no longer does these individually, they do Project Cars instead, but Codemasters took over, and I love what those British have done with it.
Codemasters swallowed Evolution from Sony, so they even have more backup now, but their releases have been outstanding even before that.
Pole Position is an all-time classic, and one of the best entries of the second gen. I play it through the PS1 Namco collection on PS3, and I use my arcade cabinet to run those, but I do agree nothing beats the originals.
The PS1 port is not as sharp in image quality as the Arcade version, perhaps because of the smoothing, and scaling, but it does the job, and it is one of the most fun games there is, and that is the reason why people even till this day still buys it through the multiple collections available on multiple platforms, plug & play, and even straight up emulation.

I have fond memories of this game and Pole Position II. I used to sit in the arcade cabinet that was shaped like a car and play until I ran out of money. Then I would sit in the cabinet and continue to pretend to play to keep kids I didn't like out of the cabinet until my brothers or other friends came over. This game was truly revolutionary for the time. Too many people use that term, but I mean it here. Racing games copied this model for years, and there is a good reason for it. Pole Position is awesome.

Pole Position is one of the really good arcade ports on the 2600. It's the only version I've played of it, and it was one of the first games I got for that console. What I really like about this game is how accessible it is. Sometimes these arcade games are just way too hard, but Pole Position is fun regardless if you're really good or bad. I love Pole Position, but it's not the best game on Atari, it's not even the best racing game (maybe Enduro is the best one), but that doesn't detract from the fact that it's great. 4/5

It's not even the best racing game (maybe Enduro is the best one) I'll give you that. Enduro is amazing on the 2600. I used to play that until my eyes were too dry to stay opened. I guess my love for the game comes from the arcade version first though. That's where most of my memories of the game come from.
