Still one of the best platformers of all time. Also my favorite of the entire Sonic series. Even if 3 + Knuckles may be objectively better, 1 is the best one for me.
It is so good that it allowed Sega to put a fight against Nintendo, and actually won on many countries like Brazil, and many places in Europe.
SNES had Super Mario World, and eventually Super Metroid, Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy III (VI), Yoshi's Island, Mega Man X, Donkey Kong Country, Contra III, F-Zero, A Link To The Past, Secret Of Mana, Illusion Of Gaia, Killer Instinct, etc., yet the Genesis was toe to toe the whole time.
When people thought Sega, they though Sonic, they thought of the vivid colors of the first stages, the music, the vibe, the rings, the speed. People was impressed, and wanted to experience that, so they bought a Genesis.
Wonder Boy and Alex Kidd may have been great and all, but they were never capable to make the Master System put a fight against the NES, and they were immediately forgotten when Sonic arrived.
Sonic One remains as one of the most genius moves in console gaming marketing. Sonic Team made an example that one game alone can make a historic impact in the entire industry, that made a name for Sega, kept it afloat for multiple generations, and is still going today.

I gave it a 4/5. It's a good game, but not a great game.

The original Sonic the Hedgehog is, IMO, by far the worst game of the original genesis/mega drive Sonic trilogy and has aged rather poorly. I would argue it's the most overrated 2D Sonic game of all time, maybe even of the entire series. My main problem with the game is the surprisingly slow gameplay and especially the terrible level design, which doesn't allow the player to reach top speed often enough. Marble Zone is my least favorite level of all the classic Genesis Sonic trilogy games for this reason.
I'm still giving it a 3/5 because I do enjoy the music and graphics a lot, but it's a game that I rarely ever go back to anymore. Thank god for Sonic 2 which added the much needed spin-dash and improved on just about every aspect of Sonic 1. (Sonic 3 is still my favorite game though)

I forgot to add Sonic 1 is the prefect combination between arcade, and console. The level design is very clever in giving you that feeling, and challenge.
Maybe that's why I didn't like 2 and 3 as much, I like them a lot, but not as much, they felt more console oriented, with a less meticulous gameplay.
Plus I like to roll solo. Having to carry a companion always felt like an extra drag I didn't ask for, but I do appreciate the new moves like the spinning dash added on 2.

I don't see how Sonic 1 is outdated in any way, but Sonic 2 is an improvement in every way, and therefore I have to give Sonic 1 a 4/5. It's still a great game, just not perfect.

Awesome game, really love it. Creative graphics and gameplay, with a lot of great design choices - like using the rings mechanics instead of standard health points, the idea of transforming Sonic into a ball to give him defense/offense when he is going fast, the "tiered" level design that gives different routes according to how well the player performs (you have to keep some momentum to maintain Sonic at the higher routes, the ones with less obstacles). Even though all of this was made better by the sequels, it was all originated already in the first game. The only thing that feels outdated about it, in my opinion, is that the original release doesn't have the spindash; its addition in some later releases (like in Sonic Jam and the 3DS version) does make the game much more enjoyable. Hey, MAYBE SEGA SHOULD MAKE A MOVIE OUT OF IT, RIGHT?

I started with Sonic 2 and didn't play this until I had the Sega 6-Pak(which also introduced me to Streets of Rage, Golden Axe, and Shinobi, great collection back then) and I didn't like it as much but still enjoyed it. I like how the game has been updated over the years and has the spin dash from 2-onwards included and now the new Sega Ages version for Switch has drop dash(from Mania).
I also like the Sega Master System version, although it's basically a different game and not a port. The level design is completely different for the most part from what I remember.

Hey, MAYBE SEGA SHOULD MAKE A MOVIE OUT OF IT, RIGHT? I really hope this is going to be offensively awful since there is no way it will be good. And just averagely lame won't be entertaining.

I'm surprised people are ripping on his movie already! Wait, no I'm not. However, Jim Carrey as Doctor Robotnik...I can't see that happening.
I reckon, instead of CGI, they should have a midget in a costume, with some Augmented Reality plastered onto it, and have them running around and freaking the humans out.
Anyway, I first saw Sonic 1 at my cousins' old house, where I realised I HAD TO HAVE IT! I HAD TO GET A MEGA DRIVE!
Also, I remember playing Sonic and Knuckles so much that I nearly had everything memorised. My next step after that should have been speed running.

Have you noticed that he isn't using gloves? He has white fur in his hands, just in his hands. Also, his more human-shaped torso makes the absence of a neck just ridiculous.
Man, the more I look at this design, the more stupid it gets. It's specially egregious that we are seeing this alongside the Detective Pikachu trailers, which seem to be doing this kind of "character in realistic style" much better.
