Such disappointment! Where's the Pub's holiday spirit?! Not a single festive film suggestion from any of you. Am I expected to believe that no one here is watching any Christmas movies this year? I figure we got one more week left before we move on to non-festive films, so send one in if you got one... This Week: Gremlins Chosen by: Dan E. KoolReleased: 1984 Starring: Zach Galligan, Phoebe Cates, Hoyt Axton, Polly Holliday, Frances Lee McCain Director: Joe Dante Producer: Michael Finnell, Steven Spielberg Writer: Chris Columbus

I never saw it, but I remember seeing the trailers multiple times when they were goimg to pass it on T.V. during the 90s.
I have never seen E.T. in its entirety either. It always seems everyone else had. The same goes with The Gonnies.

It's been a while since I last saw Gremlins. I've seen it many times, and I love it, but I'm unsure if it deserve a perfect 5/5. Was going to watch it this Christmas, but I ran out of time I guess.

What I like about the original is that it has a certain b-movie quality to it - which is expected, as it was directed by Joe Dante. It has quite a good mix of comedy and horror, plus the creature design is spot-on: the gremlins look quite believable.
I might prefer the sequel just a bit, though, for how close they got to make a live action Looney Tunes cartoon.

The sequel has a couple of moments, but surely the original surpasses it?

That's what I thought until I rewatched then two years ago, then I felt that, while the second one is generally weaker as a film, it just oozes creativity in the creature concepts and is pretty funny at times, so I guess my favourite one just depends on my mood when I'm watching them. Now that I think about it, they are more or less like Evil Dead 2 and Army of Darkness: the first one is horror-comedy, the second is more slapstick comedy with a few horror elements.

I'll give it the benefit of the doubt as I haven't watched either in many years. I'll come back to this thread once I do rewatch them, which will probably not be until next Christmas.
