I went over my friends house and instead of playing Xbox like we usually did we decided to play Super Mario Bros on his NES. We took turns on each death, holding the run button down and seeing how far each one of could get before we died (which was surprisingly far). It was fun as hell, one of the few times I can say I had as much fun losing as I did winning.
I don't think SMB stands up to scrutiny like other Mario games do, but I do think it still stands the test of time all these years later.

Speaking of which, I always hated how running works in the main SMB series. When you press the run button, instead of instantly going into a sprint Mario takes his good old time and walks for a few steps before finally running. It's so god damn annoying and one of my biggest pet-peaves with the gameplay. I don't remember Super Mario Land having that problem.

Yeah I see where you're coming from, but at the same time there's a lot of people who like the delay because it gives Mario a sense of weight. I think it's more a matter of preference, like Sonic's physics in the Genesis games.

I don't despise the original Super Mario Bros, but it's definitely not for me. Super Mario Land may have been shorter but it also had really nice nuances like actual level variety instead of the same giant mushrooms+castle theme throughout the entire game like in SMB. It's like the old saying goes, "variety is the spice of life".
