It could not be said better. It single handling saved the gaming industry from total collapse. When gaming was at the verge of commercial extinction developers came to save the day when they showed Super Mario Bros., the world stool still, and the game field was never the same. A new era in human history was born with one of the trippiest games ever made, a love letter to the already psychodelic nature of arcade gaming at the time, that deal with space, time, and dimensional travel. The game remains as one of the most iconic, influential, and widely pronounce success in game development, and it is instantly recognized in the psyche of players, and non-players around the globe. To me it remains as the best game of all time, only subjectively surpassed by later installments of the same series such as Super Mario World, and Super Mario Bros. 3, which are also super trippy, and in the case of Super Mario Bros. 3, existentially Shakespearean too.

Definitely one of if the most important game of all time. I have the original, All-Stars, and vs. arcade edition(which has been changed around a bit, taking some designs from SMB Lost Levels/Jpn2) that was released on Switch a year ago. All good stuff. I need to get back to vs. now that I mention it.

One thing that really got into my head when I played it the first time was that moment in the second level when you discover that you can run over the status screen and discover a hidden exit. That completely blew my mind. And then I just kept finding secrets in the game, it was unbelievable, especially as I was used to my (usually) single-screen Atari 2600 games. Those looked all immediatelly archaic by comparison, SMB was something else.
I think the only time I had that feeling again was when I played SM64 and thought that WOW I CAN EVEN MOVE THE CAMERA! I remember I was in a store testing it and even asked the guy if every N64 game was like that, if you could move the camera in all of them. The concept of a game in which you could move in any direction left me completely amazed, 3d gaming was just something else.
My point is that Nintendo always knew how to use Super Mario to amaze the players. Nowadays, I don't even like or play the series all that much, but I still have a huge respect for it. There's no way I can give SMB a score below 5/5.

Super Mario Bros. is the blandest and most over-discussed video game of all time. Literally any other mainstream game (like GTA San Andreas for example) has so much more to discuss. Even the majority of other hit NES titles like Ninja Gaiden and Mega Man are a million times more interesting to me.
Fuck the Super Mario Bros series. Most boring and over-rated game series ever.

I was about to write a post asking if people who didn't grow up with the game, who didn't go from the mostly arcade style gameplay to this, the first real home console experience, if those people can appreciate this game. But Spirit Bomb answered that already.

But Spirit Bomb answered that already. Look, I do appreciate what Super Mario Bros did for the gaming industry and I do acknowledge that for it's time it was a revolutionary game. But talking about it today, unless you're still a fan of it and play it regularly, is pointless. Everyone knows about it and everyone has talked about it, despite there being not much to talk about. Personally speaking I've found every 2D Mario game outside 2 (which wasn't even originally a Mario game), 3, Land, and Yoshi's Island (which usually isn't lumped together with the other Mario games because it's so radically different) to be completely bland and uninspired. Granted there are some titles that I haven't played (like SMB Land 2), but I've played most of them and they bore the crap outta me. No series is immune to criticism.

But Spirit Bomb answered that already. Also, I'd just like to say that the NES port of Ghosts N' Goblins is one of my favorite 2D platformers of all time. So there are games from that time that I enjoy. Just because Super Mario Bros was the first of its kind doesn't mean its the best, nor should I feel inclined to give it ass-pats.

But Spirit Bomb answered that already. I can answer this as well. I never grew up with it, but of course I've played a version of it, but not on the NES. Nobody can deny its influence, and even though I'm not a Nintendo guy, even I can't deny that Super Mario Bros is awesome. As scipioafricanus mentioned, it's gaming perfection. Now I haven't played it much, but the game is perfect at what it does. One of the absolute best platformers ever made (with Rayman 1995 being #1 IMO). I don't know why Spirit Bomb has a personal grudge against this game, but this is one of the legendary ones, and this is coming from a guy who would absolutely tell you otherwise if it was the case.

The Adventure of Link is a much better Nintendo NES game. Heck, I'd rather play Kid Icarus than SMB.
