I liked it, even when it wasn't the standard Mario formula.

I love this game, way better than the expansion pack that Japan got for SMB2 at the time(SMB2USA has been released there several times now). If we get a sequel to Mario Maker, I hope next time they include stuff from this game. There are quite a few spirits from SMB2 that show up in Smash Ultimate that has had me feel like replaying it.

While I prefer the more usual Super Mario gameplay, it introduced some very nice things to the series, like multiple characters with different abilities and some iconic enemies (the bob-ombs). Most importantly, it's miles above the japanese sequel, which was just an expansion pack of the first game. Even though this one was created as a sprite-edit of another game, it was a good call from Nintendo.

I haven't played this since it was ported to the GBA. I remember liking it, but I never got the itch to replay it.

I have hated this game since I first played it as a kid. I don't mean to be negative, so I won't rate it. I don't even know how to rate it. It is a quality game by Nintendo. It plays really well. I just don't like the music, the game play, or its stylings. Super Mario Bros. 3 is a masterpiece in my opinion, and it blows this game out of the water.

I don't hate the game at all. Like dschult3 said, the game is without a doubt a masterpiece of game design. What I hate is that it belongs to the Super Mario Bros. series, and no one can take that away. Not getting The Lost Levels was a low blow to us Westerners, a mockery of our mental capabilities, and of our playing skill levels. Super Mario USA is basically that, an insult to our intelligence. So even if the game is stellar in every aspect, it is hard to forget why it exists as a Super Mario Bros. game.

It could have created its own series and succeeded. The fact that Japanese developers thought that Americans were too weak to play the real sequel really throws me for a loop. However, it did create a heck of a lot of school yard rumors that there were multiple sequels in Japan that "the west" never got to see.

And Peach is the best character to play.

Phantasy Star 2 in the west came with a guide book. And if you ever played Phantasy Star 2 (or considered the existence of Bullet Hell shooters), you will understand. The Japanese are hardcore! And on another note, what ever became of King Wart?

This was always such a weird game for me. I absolutely love the music, visuals and overall imagination, and the difference in gameplay styles between the playable characters was a great addition, but the gameplay itself was just....really slow. I don't remember it being as clunky as the original SMB, but 2 still felt too slow for me. The combat itself was less interesting, since you could literally stand on top of enemies and not take any damage. The emphasis on picking up + throwing everything (enemies, objects, etc.) was a weird direction for Nintendo to take with the series, and came across as gimmicky and not very fun.
I love SMB 2 for what it did well, and it's not as annoying for me to play as the original SMB, but it still never really captivated me outside of the artistic aspects. And considering it wasn't even a Mario game to begin with makes it even less respectable as a sequel. I'm not giving it a rating, since I haven't played it enough to feel comfortable rating it. But I will say that Mischief Makers did a lot better job with executing the concept of throwing objects. Of course, Mischief Makers came out almost a decade after SMB 2, so that's not really a fair comparison I guess...
EDIT: Just looked at the ratings and realized that I had already gave it a 4/5 some time ago. That's my official rating then.

It isn't a Mario game. I wish they left it as Doki Doki Panic. I agree in principle, but I probably wouldn't have ever played it if it weren't called SMB2.

Many people may have not played it, but if Nintendo changed the story to some sort of Arabian Nights tale, I'm sure interest would have piqued for the general public.
