First! I had VF1 on my 32X! Polygons were blocky and the fights were the same every time but damn it was pretty! Unfortunately, I have never played a VF game with an even number, only the odd numbers. VF3 on the Dreamcast and VF5 on the 360. Love some good martial arts, even the sumo in VF3...he doesn't appear anymore But, played the Mega Drive version of of VF2 and was like WTF?! That was not VF, it was a lame Street Fighter clone!

I owned this game for my Saturn at one point but I never got around to playing it. Now I don't own a Saturn anymore so I might never get around to playing it...

I'm terrible at this game. I'm definitely much better at Tekken, but this is a classic.
I have the HD remaster on my arcade machine through my PS3.
It is still fun for local multiplayer, but not so much for playing against the CPU.

I vote a 4 on this, still fun but has not aged gracefully like SF2. I still revisit it from time to time on PS3.
I wonder if Sega will ever bring the series back, would be nice to play some VF on PS4 or Switch.

Virtua Fighter 2 is one of the few fighting games that can attract new players and keep them hooked with it's simplicity, yet also give hardcore fans a challenge. Not many fighting games hit that sweet spot, but Virtua Fighter 2 manages to have a plethora of moves and attacks with it's mere 3-button control scheme. On top of that, The graphics and animations were years ahead of almost anything else out at the time. Animations for newcomers like Lion and Shun-Di are still jaw-dropping to this day. This, along with the sound design, goes beyond just creating a pretty-looking game. Scoring hits feels amazing due to VF2's mo-capped animations and it's sound effects.
Playing through VF2 recently though, has made me realize it can be a pretty flawed singleplayer experience. For starters, there's a difficulty spike once you get to Pai's stage. The cpu starts ducking attacks, breaking throws, and countering like crazy. The difficulty only goes up from there, aside from Wolf's stage for some reason, he's pretty easy. By the time you get to Kage's stage all fun has been drained from the game, you can only rely on a handful of moves and are forced into fucking with the cpu through the use of shenanigans. I'd say out of the 10 stages (bonus Dural fight not included) only 6 or 7 of them are fun. On top of that, there's no variation in who you fight like most other fighting games. VF2 takes you through the same gauntlet of fighters in the same order every time you play, which does not do any favors to the replay value.
even the sumo in VF3...he doesn't appear anymore The good news is, he's in VF5 Final Showdown.

Too bad Sega abandoned the series, as it is the single most complex 3d fighting series out there and surprisingly one of the very few realistic ones (I can't think of any other high-profile realistic 3d fighting game). And VF2, especially for its time, is a very impressive beast. winnersdontusedrugs summed it up pretty well - though I don't think the Pai fight is especially egregious; that honour goes to Lion, that piece of shit that ducks under every punch and kick. I do also remember Wolf being very easy for some reason. Of course, once you know how to fight against the cpu it becomes very doable, but it really limits the strategies somewhat, depending on your character. I still give it a 5/5, though, because it was so good for the time that even the flawed single-player wasn't much of a problem. Now, to be sincere, I would argue that Fighters Megamix is the best VF game on the Saturn. That one is the single best 3d fighter of that generation. It's VF2 + Fighting Vipers + moves from VF3 + loads and loads of fanservice and many more characters than VF2. If any of you guys have a Saturn and wants to try a fighting game, get that instead of VF2. The single-player campaign is much more balanced (though a bit too easy on normal) and there is a much needed tutorial/training mode to learn the moves.

I've missed this game since I don't have a Saturn anymore. This was one of the few bargain bin price games on the console back when I had one and wouldn't be surprised if even it's over 30 bucks now. Being able to fight as the Daytona car was so absurd/awesome.

Pimpjira - Now I want to play it again! Such a great game. The sad thing is: Sega figured the "mascot fighter" genre more than 2 years before Nintendo came up with Super Smash Bros, but didn't push it enough - besides Fighters Megamix being kind of obscure even at the time and not being marketed as crazy the fanservice game it was (ads for the game only showed it as a VF2 + Fighting Vipers thing), it never got any sequels on the Dreamcast or any other console. I think Sega only fully came back to the concept of a "mascot game" more than a decade later with the All Stars Racing franchise (there was Segagaga on the Dreamcast, but it's a very niche, japanese exclusive game). By the way, here is its CGR review: I know it seems we are changing the subject of the thread, but the truth is that Fighters Megamix is, for all intents and purposes, an updated version of VF2 with many extra modes, stages and characters included. The only thing missing is the higher resolution graphics from VF2, so it looks just a bit less detailed.
