I want to give it some leeway for being among the first 1vs1 competitive fighters, but it's just a terrible game. 1/5

Added and stickied. Damn Cervantes, you're quick to rate. You did so even before I got this thing fixed.

In the same vein as Cervantes said; it did a couple of things, but it's forgotten in the grand scheme of things, and that's for good reasons.

The technology simply wasn't there for fighting games. I guess the arcade cabinet was the best considering you can hammer it like some kind of vertical Punch-Out!!, but when it comes to playing it with just a pad this game is seriously lacking.
No wonder it wasn't ported to the NES, Capcom realized it simply wasn't going work for it. Mighty Final Fight, and Street Fighter 2010 were better games, but also not by much.
Those franchises really needed the extra kick of the 16 bit power, which is a very peculiar thing considering most games on the 8 bit era were fine without it.

So, my son and I went with scipioafricanus to the great Galloping Ghost, and we saw this legendary mess for the first time. It isn't good by any measure, but my son really started to like it. There is an old school charm to it. I tried to pry him away from it so we could play the better and newer editions that lined the first row of the arcade, but he wanted to give it some time. So, I played a few rounds with him. It is very clunky, and there aren't a lot of options available. It is ahead of its time, and you could tell that they wanted to do more. I'll give it a 3 for what they were trying to do, but if you're grading it in comparison to the sequels, then it is a 1. I can't think of a fighter from that time that was better. They all sucked.
By the way...
It is a thousand times better than Karateka on the Atari 7800. To hell with that turd.

Did they have the version that you have to hit it down? Or did they just have one with normal buttons? This is the bad one: This is the original, the good one:

Oh yeah, no, that's basically a port. The game was designed for the other one, where your real life strength, and stamina, matters when you punch it; which is the only way the game becomes redeemable.

I have never seen the first game in an arcade, and I remember thinking the TG-16 was a myth too. Is the original even more rare?

Most likely, it wouldn't surprise me if it never left Japan. I can see myself having fun with it. I wouldn't mind owning an original one just to release stress once in a while. Either that, or Real Puncher from Taito:

I have never played Street Fighter 1 but it strikes me as a "so bad it's good" kind of game, particularly due to the atrocious audio, although everyone seems to agree that the gameplay is far too frustrating to redeem the game as a whole. Still, when listening to this shit I just can't help but laugh my ass off:
Classic stuff. The primitive digitized audio from that era always kills me.
But I will say this in the game's favor: Street Fighter I's roaster of fighters, though generic, is still respectable compared to any of the newcomers from SF V and most of IV's newcomers as well. I thought it was cool that Capcom brought some of them back for the Street Fighter Alpha games and Capcom Vs SNK 2.
I have one last remark to make about the game: has anyone else noticed that this is the only game in the series where Ryu's hair is red? I wonder what the story behind that is. Is this the same Ryu that appears in the sequels? Or is it a different Ryu? We may never know...

winnersdontusedrugs Any final thoughts on Street Fighter? You're one of the few people here who has played it, and its body is being laid to rest, so it could use some kind words.
