Super Mario Bros. 3 is easily best game of all time contender. I heard this was also one of the most anticipated games of the early days. It was featured in Hollywood's blockbuster hit "The Wizard" with Fred Savage, and the Nintendo Championships really built that hype.
Subjectively I do prefer Super Mario World, probably because of nostalgic reasons, soundtrack, the 16 bit presentation, artstyle, and overall gameplay, but the innovation that 3 brought to the table I recognize makes it the superior one objectively speaking, even though it was before my time.

This is one of my most favorite games of all time (Top 3? I can't make up my mind on which is the best). When I get stressed, I play through this game. When I'm done with my current favorite game, I play Mario 3. I have been playing this game since launch on a myriad of systems, and I love it so much. This is my favorite Mario game, bar none.

I never actually played the original version until I was in my 20s, grew up with the All-Stars version. My brother and I played it together all the time as kids and we would argue but who is getting the toad houses(or huts as we called them).
