The amazing thing is that it was never on the arcades. This game was specifically designed for consoles.
They actually didn't nail down that concept until the second one, but the lack of arcades in mind factor makes the whole trilogy truly special.
In this case it makes the game stand out because unlike platformers that is a genre suited for consoles, the beat 'em up genre is for the arcades, so having a non-arcade beat 'em up is revolutionary.
I can't think of any other proper beat 'em up with free movement that was not on the arcades, except for these games. They are very exceptional, and worth it of all the praise they get, and the multiple ports on modern platforms.

stratogustav - I think the sequels to Final Fight (and the Genesis sequels to Golden Axe) are console exclusive, but then they are sequels - you're right in that, at its time, SoR was an exception in being a pure beat'em up series developed with consoles in mind. I guess it was Sega's way of saying that their Genesis/Mega Drive was on par with arcade machines. That's a bold statement.

This is also one where the manual is a must. Otherwise, you wouldn't know that you can land after being thrown without any damage (press up and jump before you land). Carries over to 2 as well.

The original Streets of Rage is definitely the worst game in the series, IMO. As much as I bitch about SoR 2, it's still a better game in literally every way than its predecessor. Outside of the soundtrack, there is literally nothing exceptional about Streets of Rage 1. Even for its time it was a very average beat-em-up, especially in regards to its gameplay, which is completely run-of-the-mill and offers no innovations over other beat-em-ups from the same time period. If there's one thing I can say in Rage 1's favor, it's that it's the only game in the series that had half-decent North American boxart: Not too shabby! I don't know what the official story behind the deteriorating quality of Sega's North American boxart is between the release of the Genesis to the discontinuation of the Saturn, but it would probably make for a good documentary. But yeah, the first game was a completely average beat-em-up for its time and has only gotten worse since then. When it was released I would say it was a 3/5 game, but nowadays it offers so little compared to its sequels (especially 3) that I'm comfortable calling it a bad (2/5) game. I never have the urge to go back and play it because of the vast improvements Sega made to the gameplay in the sequels.

This was my most played game on the Sega 6pak, after Golden Axe. Because it had co-op though. It was 4th favorite game on it after Sonic, Revenge of Shinobi, and Golden Axe.

Pimpjira - My cousin had that 6-pak cartridge! Talk about a good selection of games, it was a very good way to introduce the Genesis to anyone who didn't know about its games. I remember we preferred SoR over Golden Axe, but any of them was a good choice anyway.

I stared out with Sonic 2.

I'm curious since Golden Axe is my second favorite Genesis beat-em-up after SoR 3.
