Out of all the Final Fantasy games, this is the one that annoys me the most. So 1/5 for me.

What happened is that apparently 6 (3) was such a masterpiece that the awaiting of this was super hyped, and invested before it came out, and since it came out on 3D, and it was long 100 hours investment to play through the whole thing, people end up loving it a lot.
I haven't played it, but knowing the long record of Square during the Super Nintendo, I'm sure it was at least we'll made, just like any other Final Fantasy game.
Even till this day they are still discovering things for it:

Playing a little bit of Kingdom Hearts 3 has given me the urge to go through one of my nostalgic Final Fantasy games for some reason. Should I play through this or FFX?

It's not in my top 5 JRPGs or even top 5 FFs but I finally beat the game after it was released on PS4 and enjoyed it quite a bit. First few attempts had me always stopping somewhere in the middle.

I don't know how to rate this game fairly. I played through the PC version (it is in a box around here somewhere), and I originally hated it (in 1998?). I've played it again, and I like it more. I still hate the ending, though. I hated all of the pomp and circumstance thrown in with the excessive accolades it received in '97, so I'm a bit jaded on this game. I always felt that Final Fantasy IV and VI were far superior, but this game does have its merits. The score is phenomenal for what crap Nobuo Uematsu had to put up with. The Playstation could produce so much more, but he was limited to MIDI, and he did something special with it. The steam punk aura of the game was cool for the time, but it has been overdone since then. I loved the carnival and the mini games within. I loved the anime feel to it too. I don't feel like I can give it a fair rating due to my bias, I suppose. The game isn't on the top of the list for me, but it isn't on the bottom either. It was an industry first for many things, and I think it deserves credit where credit is due. However, I don't religiously play it every year like VI though.

In retrospect, 7 isn't my favourite Final Fantasy, but this is the game that got me to buy a Playstation. I already an N64, but the PS1 was the first console I purchased for myself. Glad I wasn't one of those folks who didn't realize they'd need a memory card until the first save point. Having replayed it recently on the PS4...it is definitely a bit rough. Visually, I think it has aged the worst of the PS1 Final Fantasy entries but....those matte backgrounds and polygons were a great idea at the time for getting around technical limitations, and definitely looked different from anything else we'd seen. Playing it again, I definitely feel a bit of that magic, and it is hard to argue that this is the game that got a lot people in the West to take notice of JRPGs, and I think the genre is better for it. It will be interesting to try the remake when it starts coming out, possibly some time in 2035

I've tried playing it twice, but I can never get really into it. Maybe with the remake being more of an action game (which is more of my liking nowadays) I should give it another try.
