I have a lot of fondness for Final Fantasy VIII, though I remember it not being too well thought of at the time.
Visually, I think it has held up much better than FFVII, as the people look a lot more like people and much less like block monsters.
I remember really enjoying the segments switching over from Squall to Laguna and getting and idea of what was going on. The Gardens were interesting, as I know I'm often irritated when a series decides to create an entry where everyone is in high school, but a mercenary military academy seemed like a neat idea, and I remember how cool it was seeing it turn into a floating battle station.
This was probably the peak of summon animations being too long (not counting Knights of the Round in FFVII of course), but once you figured out the junction system, I don't think most players did a ton of summoning.

I like this game a lot. I've played through it many times over the years, and I enjoyed the hell out of it. Once again, I played it on the PC, and I really enjoyed the story line, the music, the junction system, and the card game (until stupid continental rules were forced on you). I loved the time travel bit, and I always thought the mercenary story would work amazingly well with sequels or prequels. I'd love to see a modern twist to this with smaller to mid level merc missions. It would be great to see it online, and you could create a character who can accept or decline missions and level up accordingly. That sort of thing suits the story well. The only thing that REALLY annoys me is the amnesia trope ( scipioafricanus hates it more than me!), but it sort of makes sense with the junctioning system. The graphics really hold up much better than 7, and the music is phenominal. The score at the end of the game gives me chills to this day, and yet many people don't know the music as much as Jenova from 7. I really think that is a shame. The love story made me roll my eyes at first, but it has become endearing to me over time. I really wish they hashed out the Blue Island in Centra more when you got Odin. The abandoned experimental ship needed some DLC too. I wanted to learn so much more about those two stories. Overall, this is a great game, but if you were to play it cold, it may annoy people in 2019, because the first disc is mostly a "how to" set of chapters. The game really picks up after the assassination attempt, and I adore the story for what its worth.
On a side note, the "Squall is dead" and the "Ultimicia is Rinoa" theories really made me love the game even more about a decade ago. That really messed up my head for a while after reading it. It was one of those situations where you see something that rocks your cognitive structure and you just say, "Damn..." and get depressed. I've read that Square has debunked it, but wow....that would be some messed up story telling right there. It is fun to pontificate, though.

Heh, can't believe I had forgotten to mention Triple Triad. Great for killing time. I had played a flash version pretty regularly many years ago, and I had the Final Fantasy Portal app on my phone for quite a while just to play Triple Triad. I believe it is in FFXIV as well.
Evoland, which I played through recently, had a parody card game called 'Double Twin'.

The art direction is clearly a massive step up from FF VII, so for that I respect it. Though I know very little about the FF series and have never been particularly fond of JRPGs, so I'm not sure if I will ever play it.

If I remember correctly this is the EA game that has a licensing issue that won't allow Square to port it to various modern platforms.

That would be the first time I've heard anything to that effect. The Square EA partnership published FFIX as well and that hasn't prevented it from being re-released to modern platforms. FFVIII did also get a Classics release on the PS3, and a re-release on the PC, (though of course it had a PC release back in the day as well).

I've read on at least a half dozen sites that there is a section of code lost, and that is why you haven't seen an HD reskin. Others claim that it has to do with the licensing to "Eyes On You." I find that insane, but who knows. It could all be internet lore.

I know there was apparently a lot of FFX's visual assets lost before they went to do a remaster, leading them to have to build some things from scratch. Would be nice to see FFVIII get a similar treatment. I can't really see it getting a ground-up remake like FFVII...and given how long that's taking, it might be for the best

Can't say much about the gameplay, but it surely lookd impressive at the time: I especially loved how the cutscenes morphed into gameplay graphics at some points (I specifically remember they being chased by a robot spider and the entire scene/boss fight being very cool). As with most FF games, I never got very far into it - just got to the second disc and dropped the game. I don't know what's the problem between me and FF, but even if I like the games and want to finish them, I still end up always dropping them at some point.

I finally beat FFVIII earlier this year and enjoyed it a lot. I had remembered this as being a harder FF but maybe I didn't get it back in the day. Most bosses are easily cheesed with aura and meltdown.

Apparently the code wasn't lost, since Square is releasing an upscaled version. I'm very happy to see that. I hope one day that they will receive enough interest in it to expand the universe, since there is a lot of potential there.
