Cross posting here, since I just finished a replay:
Finished up Final Fantasy IX. First time, I've played through it in many years and I have to say....it remains my least favourite of the three PS1 entries. I like Zidane, Garnet and Vivi's story arcs, and to a lesser degree Freya's, but I don't like Amarant or Quina at all, and I find Steiner grating throughout most of the game.
Still, an excellent score though, and some nice story beats. It just might be another 20 years before I feel like playing this one again.
Edit: Was just thinking that some of what might put me off in the background is there are a lot of anthropomorphized animals in the game. Not just Freya's race, which are sort of rat-people, but at least have a country/history that's explored. Just random dog, hippo, etc people running around Alexandria and Lindblum with no explanation. Always something I find a bit off-putting in a game.

One can consider this a trilogy. Final Fantasy VII, Final Fantasy VIII, and Final Fantasy IX as far as I know are not interconnected, but they share many characteristics for being part of the same era, which would make Final Fantasy IX, the end of it, and Final Fantasy X the beginning of something new, just like Final Fantasy VII was to Final Fantasy III [VI].

I mean, they definitely share their aesthetic in some ways. The whole "polygon characters on matte painting backgrounds" definitely defines the look of the PS1 Final Fantasy games.

Although I've played 7 and 8, all the other FF games after those eluded me. I've heard this one was pretty good and more of a throwback to FF 1-5, eschewing the "magical sci-fi" style that marked FF 6-8.

Yes and no. The main world doesn't have tech much beyond airships and cannons, but there is magi-sci-fi turn near the end, similar to those that a lot of other JRPGs have.
That definitely isn't new though. Even FF1 featured ruins of much more advanced civilizations, and special enemies like WarMech.

This went from the PS1 FF I was the most familiar with(since it was the only one I beat) to least familiar with over the last few years, since I haven't played through it since it originally came out.
