Personally, I have way more fun with this than the first game. And if I want a more quick and casual experience, there is a version of this on Switch that has all Link's stats maxed out.

The dungeons may be a little repetitive and the dificulty might go through the roof sometimes, but it's still among the best action/RPG/platformers on the NES (I guess Faxanadu and Rygar are other examples in this mixed genre). Nintendo should revisit the idea of a side-scrolling Zelda someday; Konjak (who developed Noitu Love 2 and The Iconoclasts) made a really damn good proof-of-concept called Legend of Princess, a short but very well made fangame: (It's in the "Other games" section)

I actually wish more 2D Zelda games were made, Link really goes well for this kind of gameplay. At least this game exists, and we have that satisfaction.

One of my favorite Zelda games and a much needed change of pace from the original Legend of Zelda. Instead of being a top down pseudo-RPG without any actual RPG mechanics, Zelda II went for an action game approach and got rid of the crappy top down perspective the first game used. As a result it became something that was actually worth my time. I love absolutely every design change, even the bumped-up difficulty. It was also the first Zelda that had a dark atmosphere to it; the spooky temple themes, bosses, extensive use of the color black, and the game over screen always gave me chills. Along with OoT and Majora's Mask, Zelda II is one of the few LoZ titles that I still enjoy as an adult. Definitely a 5/5 game for me, and is my single favorite NES game (although I haven't played very many...).
