Unmatched. A masterpiece, and one of the most artistic of the industry.
So inspiring that people would learn to beat it blindfolded.
It is a true statement of ingenuity, and creativity, that raised the standard for excellence in game design.

Castlevania games are strong in atmosphere, but i don't think they're ever intended to be scary in the same sense resident evil or silent hill was.
And in terms of atmosphere i think super castlevania 4 takes the take. But SOTN is great also. love the way it uses silence when in certain corridors.

If you're referring to the text of the ratings, they're simply flavor text and you should just rate the game as if they were generic scores.

Funny you should post this. I've just been playing it and I'm nearing the end. I wish it wasn't, though.
This is a game you can get lost in. There are a hundred secrets waiting for you to find them and a hundred different enemies waiting to slay you. This is more than just a simple step up for the Castlevania series, in terms of game play and story telling.
Also, notice how it's shamelessly 2D in an age where that was being phased out. Also, notice how the soundtrack is more mellow than past titles. At least in Dracula X Chronicles.
However, gripes: if you don't have the original PS1 manual, you probably wouldn't know about DOWN+UP+JUMP, or even that you can do it in friggin' mid-air! Also, the inventory gets cluttered, with no way to lose your obsolete equipment. Familiars can be a bit dumb and weak, plus two of them have duplicates (faerie/fairy and demon/nose demon). Oh, and most of the bought spells are hard to pull off.
P.S. The Saturn version had an area called the Forgotten Garden, not available anywhere else.

This is the only Castlevania game I've played all the way through, and by all the way through I mean I really really completed this game. I bought this game for my Xbox 360 a long time ago, and I went for the achievement to explore 200.6% of the castle. It's such a weird percentage. I went all the way and explored every nook and cranny. The game is so fun, and it has so much stuff to do in it. There are so many items and so many factors that play in when you make your character of Alucard. You can get lost in it all, and I think that makes for a varied playthrough which I think is needed when the game is so long. The bosses are great, and their voice overs are even better xD. The atmosphere is top notch and a lot of that has to do with the excellent music. I can get play this game forever, and I think I need to go back to it soon and give it another go. 5/5
