I finally beat this game last year and loved it. It's not the most polished NES game but it has a lot of charm and is a fun game. It has a spooky atmosphere and a sense of humor with many of the boss/enemy designs. I thought this game was brutally hard but
that review taught me that you can farm health in the game. It's still no cakewalk by any means but a very beatable game.
You know, I never paid attention that this has the same developer as Clock Tower. I'd recommend the game to try for anyone who likes NES, it was still an affordable <$20 title the last I checked.

This is what I consider a hidden gem for me since I never heard of it before.
I have the entire NES, and SNES libraries now, so it is a blast to discover games like this, and enjoy them on my Mini Classic systems with the controller they were meant to be played with.
It may not be as good as having the original copy, but it definitely does the job, specially considering I play them on a 4K TV, since I no longer have a CRT which would be the superior way to play them.

That transition from the real world to hell just freaked the hell out of me as a kid. This game is awesome!
