Game Discussion of the Week: Splatterhouse series

The TurboGrafx-16 game is a total classic. I imagine shocking indeed for the time. Horror at its finest. I don't know about the reboots, but the original is badass, and extremely cool. You basically play as Jason, but with the strength of Michael Myers, so they call you Rick.

I've never played this version but from what I remember they changed the color of the mask to try and make it look less Jason didn't they? I wonder why Namco was afraid of being sued with this version but not any of the other rereleases(also Splatterhouse 2 and 3 on Genesis, and the reboot on PS3/360).

The arcade version is a great game and I was playing it recently on Namco Museum for the Switch. Unfortunately I had to cut my game short and didn't beat it, it's a hard game. Even though you can pump in endless quarters you don't just respawn on the spot like many other arcade games. It uses checkpoints and if you have to continue it starts the level over.

The Famicom version(I say version here very loosely, while it shares some levels and bosses other stuff is completely different) of the game is also quite fun and is very cute without all the grotesque violence. 



And...I've never beaten it. I need to git gud at these games.

I haven't played much of Splatterhouse 2 and 3 for Genesis, but they seemed good from what I did. One of them tried to change things up and made the game less linear with different rooms and stuff to go into with a time limit(I think 3). I didn't quite decide if I liked that or not. Those two games are a big reason I just need to get a Genesis everdrive or something so I can play them on console, they are pricey. 

I just checked, and yes they did. I must have been playing the PC Engine Rom instead because I only remember the Jason look. Which is a great look. I don't blame them for being afraid initially, but maybe later they realized it was OK.

I don't think I've seen anyone say that but I wouldn't certainly agree it's not a top tier game. It's some simple fun for me to play during the halloween season.

I don't think it was on strato's top 100 list either.

I've seen a few youtubers claim it to be they're favourite game of all time as well as members on other forums. But still, besides playing as Jason Voorhees and art style, the game is just a bit too straight forward to even be mentioned as many times as it does. For me it's just a game that was ok for its time.
