Lucas Arts was shitting fun games left and right back then, I'm surprised they didn't become a major publisher. In fact I think this one was published by Konami, and the game isn't even Japanese.
The same thing happened with Metal Warriors, and Konami. If you think about it, that only speaks good of Lucas Arts because Konami was a quality control freak back then, and to put their name on a Lucas Arts product means a lot.
Lucas Arts had many other popular ones on the Super Nintendo like all three Star Wars Trilogy games, Indiana Jones, Ghoul Patrol, and Big Sky Trooper.
Nintendo noticed they were producing quality, and it is my personal theory that Nintendo designed their next console, the Nintendo 64, trying to accommodate many of the features Lucas Arts wanted for the next gen.
I mentioned some of these theories of mine here before, but when Rogue Squadron was on development by Factor 5, Nintendo was already getting ready for it.
Rogue Squadron is responsible for many things:
1. The big tech demo that was the first level of Shadow Of The Empire on Nintendo's launch.
2. The N64 controller, which to me was an early model / spoiler of the Naboo N-1 Starfighter.
3. The N64 expansion pack, and the overall 64 bits architecture that helped the N64's 3D blow out of the water any 3D renditions from other console competitors.
In fact, it is my theory that these accomodations to Lucas Arts were the reason why the console was delayed, and why Rare's Killer Instinct had to get a Super Nintendo port instead of launching alongside with the N64, as it was originally planned.

I've never beaten this game, but it's fun up until that game over screen. I feel like it would get repetitive if I tried to play through all 55 levels in one sitting though.
As a kid I always saw this at Blockbuster but I thought it was another bad movie game(there is no ZAMN movie) for some reason so I avoided it until I was in my 20s and got it on Wii VC.

Funny, I also saw this at Blockbuster as well, and the N64 was already half way its lifespan, so I always relate it to Blockbuster for that reason.

I know it's not the popular opinion, but I found it repetitive and a bit aimless - the level design seems just random. I can't see myself playing 55 levels of this. The art style never grabbed me either.
At the same time, there's nothing wrong with the game, it's generally well made. A 3/5 to me.
