Also from the same mastermind behind Super Mario World, and Super Mario Bros. 3, Takashi Tezuka, once again leaves an imprint that can survive through the test if time.
This guy is a genius, Link's Awakening, and A Link To The Past also belong to him, and with this title he continued to show his excellence.
Instead of extending the story like the Super Mario Land games that take place at the end of the saga, he decided to go back to the origins when Mario was just a baby, and it is Yoshi the one in charge of transporting the future hero.
With excellent art direction, visuals, music, platforming, sound, and gameplay development, this title will hold up as an all time classic for future generations to enjoy.

I can't believe I still haven't played Yoshi's Island. The N64 was my first Nintendo console so I missed out on the NES and SNES titles, and while most of Nintendo's 2D games are hit-or-miss for me, Yoshi's Island has always interested me. I was a huge fan of the visual design of Yoshi Story as a kid, so when I learned about Yoshi's Island I knew it was a game I had to play. ...Still haven't played it, though. Part of the problem is that it didn't get ported to later systems as much as most other classic 2D Nintendo titles did. It wasn't added to the Wii's virtual console service until long after I had abandoned that POS system, and I never got the sense that SM Advanced 4 (Yoshi's Island's GBA port) did the game's visuals justice. At this point I just hope I'm able to play it before I die.

The visuals is what does it for me. The art style for its time was amazing and still looks better than most of the 2d games that come out today. But gameplay wise it was a step down from the previous Mario games. Yoshi's Island felt too linear and lacked variety. Still a 8/10 game though.

I totally agree with Bogard about the visual design of Yoshi's Island. I've always admired Nintendo's attempts at incorporating traditional art styles into their games; Yoshi's Island, Yoshi Story, Kirby's Dream Land 3 and Paper Mario 64 are some of my favorite examples, with Yoshi's Wooly World and Yoshi's Crafty World being good modern examples. As much as I bitch about all the things that are wrong with Nintendo, they've always seemed to be the masters when it comes to capturing the feel of art styles like crayon and pastel in video games.

It's easily one of top SNES games. The biggest fault would be calling it Super Mario World 2 as it has very little in common with SMW in how it plays. I love the rockin' final boss theme. www.youtube.com/watch?v=C1Ose7A8P94
