My favorite game of the series, and the most fun of them all. What makes this one so good is the simplicity of the combat, where it finally reached the refinement I wanted for the possibilities of outcome in each battle. This is basically Virtua Fighter with weapons.
I feel everytime they tried to add complexity to the series in later entries, it ruined it. I blame Tekken for this because Tekken is good adding complexity, and I'm sure they wanted to replicate that, but for some reason with SoulCalibur, it simply doesn't work the same.

Never was a big fan of Soulcalibur 2. Loved Soul blade, really liked Soulcalibur 1. But there was just some thing missing in Soulcalibur 2. the battles seem to last five seconds a round and gamplay felt very bland and simplistic. killed the franchise for me.

What made the original SC's gameplay more complex than two? I have played Soul Edge, SC 1, SC 2 and a bit of SCIV; I remember SC's gameplay being (seemingly) exactly the same as 2's. It sounds to me like you weren't much of a fan of the Soul Calibur series to begin with if you swore it off after playing 2, since critics at the time generally agreed that 2 changed very little from the original SC.

It sounds to me like you weren't much of a fan of the Soul Calibur series to begin with if you swore it off after playing 2, since critics at the time generally agreed that 2 changed very little from the original SC. Soul Edge was my favourite 3D fighter second to Rival Schools. I even liked it more that Street fighter EX 2 alpha. Soul calibur was a great sequel. With Soul Caliber 2 I just can't put my finger on it but there was something missing. It just lacked the Soul of the first game. Same goes for the Tekken series. I loved Tekken 3, but Tag tournament although didn't do anything different to Tekken 3 just felt empty. The transition i'm talking about is more apparent with other genres such as platformers. Take Spyro the Dragon for instance. The Spyro series on the ps1 are some of the best platformers ever made. But the ps2 games are disliked by even by fans of the series although they didn't do anything different to the ps1 games. There's something that gets lost in transition which i think effected a lot of these early 3D fighters also.
