I give the dev team a lot of credit, since they built a game from the ground up in a rather short period of time. However, the use of AI, and what seems like stolen assets from Pokémon looks rather bad. I don't have a solid opinion about it yet.

Never been a big fan of that genre, so only on my peripheral awareness. I have enjoyed the genre from time to time, but Pokemon hit while I was in high school, so even though I was a big Nintendo fan from childhood, it was a time when it could have gone either way. I knew a few folks at the time to whom it really appealed, but it didn't click for me. I didn't play through gen 1 until I had Yellow on the 3DS. Weirdly, the closest thing in that genre that I was into for a bit was Monster Rancher 1 and 2 on the PS1...and I think I really just liked the idea of getting monsters from scanning CDs. I do know a few people playing Palworld who seem to be really enjoying it though.

IF it's a satire, it's allowed a little bit of plagiarism, so AI works well here.

IF it's a satire, it's allowed a little bit of plagiarism, so AI works well here. It isn't satire. They made an entire game with assets that look like they were AI generated. I saw yesterday that the Pokemon company was looking into asset stealing as well. I don't know if any of these internet claims will hold up though.

Despite the obvious "visual reference" from Pokémon, it seems the game itself is one of those generic survival games, like Ark, Rust etc. I've read an interview with a lawyer on Rock, Paper, Shotgun that said it would be very hard for The Pokémon Company to have a solid case, since the game itself is very different and the creatures, despite the obvious visual copy, are still different just enough to avoid being sued. Think of those mockbuster movies (Transmorphers) that, while being made just to cash on the success of "real" movies, could still exist without being sued to oblivion. So, unless it could be proven without doubt that assets from Pokémon were directly used in the game, just the visual similarity of the creatures would not be enough to build a case.
That said, I finally watched today a gameplay video (more precisely, one done by Digital Foundry) and the game looks terrible and clearly in early access. For an actually good Pokémon-inspired game that plays like it but has its own identity, I've heard Cassette Beasts is the one to go for.

For an actually good Pokémon-inspired game that plays like it but has its own identity, I've heard Cassette Beasts is the one to go for. From some of the videos I have seen from the "anti-Palworld" people, game designers are suggesting that the Palworld dev team used AI to rip off the foundations of the game and then tweak it. The developers of Palworld are very open about having 0 experience in game development, yet they have a game engine, enemy AI, sound assets (which seem to be pitched versions of other games), good/bad guy art models, terrain, etc. I guess they are not calling it a rip off as bad as a reskin, but rather disingenuously calling it "their" creation without truly creating much of the basic design. Rip offs have always existed, but at least rip offs had to build their rip off from the ground up. Asset reuse or engine reuse is OK, as long as it is paid for. With AI, you can copy it, without calling it a copy. The AI develops the code and then tweaks it so it isn't technically stolen. Some of these devs are saying that it will halt true game innovation, because there won't be incentive to do real development from the ground up. On the other hand, there are people saying that the majority of the games in the last decade look like copy and paste junk anyway, so who cares? I'm impressed that this company was able to put together a game without any background knowledge, while using the tools available to them.

I didn't even know what it was, when someone mentioned it to me I thought it was something related to the European region.
