Love it. R-Type Delta is my Final Fantasy VII of side-scrolling spaceship shooters.

The first game is the only one I've played through, need to get back into playing more from this series. I did play III(SNES), Delta(I think it was Delta, or maybe it was R-Types hard to remember), and Final a little but never got far into them.

Too slow. No sense of scrolling speed. (Played and finished Delta in the day)
Weapon effects are kewl, but it just lacks a certain essential feeling of flight I need to stay enthralled in a scrolling shooter.

Man, I really want to like horizontal-scrolling shooter, but I absolutely suck in all of them. I mean, I suck at shmups in general, but on vertical ones I can survive much more seconds than on hori ones.
I can't rate this series; it looks awesome, but I'm a shitty player.

I liked R-Type Dimensions, but its no Raiden. Weapon upgrades are pretty cool, especially the one that sweeps across ceilings and floors.

The first R-Type I played is Dimensions. I like how they designed it in a way that if you memorize everything that comes in the level, you can get a perfect run. It gives you a nice sense of accomplishment. Plus I appreciate the ability of going back to a 16 bit look along with the modern look. I can tell the game has a lot of fan service, and that's always a good thing.
Shoot 'Em Up is probably my favorite genre after Fighting. We were talking on the PS4 community how we wish we had some of those Xbox shmups exclusives on the PlayStation. We have some, but nothing in comparison to the vast amazing collection of shmups the Microsoft people has access to.

I have never played an R-type game in my life. But I have massive respect for the series because it was made by IREM, a team from which the makers of Metal Slug 1-3 split from. Metal Slug X and 3 are two of my favorite games, X in particular. Off topic, but you know what's really crazy? The people behind the first 3 classic Metal Slug games have never revealed their full names. We're talking about 3 of the greatest run and gun shmups of all time, and these godly game designers were so modest that they didn't even give themselves proper credit! They're like the Vincent Van Goghs of game design, all of them. Sorry, but this really bothers me. I absolutely love those games.

Capcom and SNK had policies that prevented designers to come out because they were afraid other companies would take them.
They were so talented that they didn't want others to harass them with financial offers to switch with other publishers.
I think I mentioned that before, but that's the reason why they couldn't use their real names in the games credits, instead they had to make up random names that only they knew who they represented.
As seen in all the Capcom and SNK fighters of that generation. The same goes with shmups, so the fact the run and gun games had that going too does not surprises me.

It's one of those weird things... I have played at least one R-Type, I can't remember which one, but it certainly was before the Ps2 one. And... I just don't care as much as I do for other shmups, horizontal or not.

Yeah, I really don't remember the games that well myself. I remember liking what I played but not being wowed by it. I do have R-Type Dimensions(bought it on sale for like $3 or something, or maybe even a PS+ freebie I don't remember for sure) maybe I'll give that a spin I have a more current view on it.

Now that I'm reading some answers I'm surprised that R-Type is made by Irem, because I love almost every other game from them I've played, like Ninja Spirit, Dragon Breed and Spelunker.

Here is proof of what I said. Just look at the programmers: "Knight Rider Gyu", "Señor", "Pon", "Hyper ShinChan", "Hard. Yas", "Team Dirty Beret", etc.. It's just a bunch of made up bushit names. No wonder Kojima is all traumatized for working in that kind of environment.

Just a heads up for this weeks game discussion; it'll be delayed for maybe a day.

I love Third Lightning on the SNES, but, be damned, I do not own it. Could have scored it for $9.99 about a decade ago, but I thought that was too expensive at the time. <_<
That said, I have a number of R-Type games...
R-Type (Master System) Super R-Type (SNES) R-Type (GB) R-Type DX (GBC) R-Type III: Third Lightning (GBA) R-Type Final (PS2) R-Type Command (PSP) R-Type Dimensions (PS3)
I believe my brother's TG16 version of R-Type is also here... but I'd have to dig it out.
