I don't know about anyone else but some of the most valued games to me personally in my collection are of video game compilations. My first experience with the concept was this gem right here:
And it was easily one of my most played SNES carts. At the time I did not have an NES so it was a great way to play Super Mario Bros. 1-3 and the Lost Levels(which was it's first release in the US, I think everyone knows about this by now). Even now that I have the original versions, I still ended up buying Super Mario All-Stars again for the Wii because it's nice having those games together, easily playable on a console I regularly have plugged in. I know lots of people ask why rebuy games or buy old games at all when there is emulation but I like to have legally obtained copies. Also not to mention being able to play them on my TV with modding consoles and stuff which I won't go into.
I think the best era for video game compilations must have been PS2/Gamecube/Xbox as they were released left and right back then. Sega, Capcom, and SNK really seemed on board with the idea as they all had multiple collections released that gen. Unfortunately since the inception of Playstation Network, Xbox Live, and Virtual Console they have fallen to the wayside for the most part but not entirely. Some of the best ones came last gen with Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection for PS3/360 and Mega Man Zero Collection for DS. Also recently there was Mega Man Legacy Collection, Sega 3D Classics Collection(which I bought even though I don't have a 3DS to play it on right now, hopefully soon) and we are looking at some Atari collections pretty soon but there aren't too many of them anymore.
Here is a quick top ten of my favorite collections:(must have atleast 4 games to be considered so not counting double packs and trilogies)
1. Super Mario All-Stars (SNES/Wii) - Easily my top spot considering what a great value it was when released on the SNES. In 2010 the Wii release felt a bit lacking(at the very least it could have been the + World version) which how much more could have been included but it's still a great value and it doesn't diminish the original release either.
2. Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection (PS3/360) - With 40 Genesis games plus unlockable Master System and Arcade titles this is the biggest video game collection in one single release that I'm familiar with.
3/4. Capcom Classics vols. 1-2 (PS2/PSP) - The two of these collections contain a good number of Capcom's best arcade titles. Many of them were hit with console limitations for the home release so it was great to have the arcade versions readily available to play.
5. Mega Man X Collection (PS2/Gamecube) - It was great getting Mega Man X 1-6 in one set especially since some of the SNES entries were getting expensive at the time.
6. Mega Man Anniversary/Legacy Collection (PS2/Gamecube/Xbox/PS4/X1/3DS/PC) - I am including both collections here because they each have their merits. The MMA collection has more games with 7-8 and Power Fighters, but the new Legacy Collection also has a fun challenge mode and is only $15 digitally(seems to be around $18 physical now also).
7. Mega Man Zero Collection (3DS) - Yeah a lot of Mega Man here but the Mega Man Zero games on GBA were fun and this includes all four of them.
8. Kirby Dream Collection (Wii) - A few more games would have been nice but it's still six good to great Kirby games in one package.
9. Metal Gear Solid Legacy Collection (PS3) - This had a lot of value with the Metal Gear Solid HD Collection(2-3, Peacemaker, Metal Gear 1-2) MGS4, and codes for MGS and VR missions included.
10. Metal Slug Anthology (PS2/Wii/PSP/PS4) - Can't really go wrong with Metal Slug 1-6 and X all on one collection. It's short on extras and I don't think the games are quite arcade perfect but they are close.
Honorable mentions: The many versions of Namco Museum collections, Midway Arcade Origins, Street Fighter Anniversary/Alpha collections, SNK classics vol. 1(there is no vol. 2 unfortunately), Gradius Collection(if this were on console it would have been more than an honorary mention)
That's my list and I hope to be able to add more later as hopefully some more will be seen this generation. And with that I will make one more and do a quick 5 of collections that I would like to see. (these are very unlikely to ever happen)
1. Castlevania Collection - I was going to say a Konami collection but Castlevania has enough games between NES, SNES, PS1, GBA, DS, etc to get one all to it's itself. Like Konami would actually be interested.
2. Capcom Disney/Marvel Collection - Capcom made a lot of great Disney and Marvel games so I would love this. DuckTales Remastered happened so who knows, but I doubt it.
3. Compile Collection - Compile is one of my favorite developers as they made a lot of great shmups(Aleste, Gun Nac, etc) as well as the Puyo Puyo series.
4. Metroid Collection: Metroid 1-2, Super Metroid, Zero Mission, Prime Trilogy and Fusion would be sweet all on one Wii U disc.
5. TMNT Collection - Even in a dream I would only expect to be able to get them from one publisher so of course the Konami ones. TMNT 1-4, the GB games, all three versions of Turtles Tournament Fighters in one set would be really nice.
And that will close this subject for me now, wasn't originally planning to do two lists. I did not include HD remasters/remakes here(well MGS Legacy is a bit of an exception there) because I might write about that in the future, pretty likely actually. What do you guys think of game compilations, if you like them have any favorites or ones you'd like?
