I remember when this game was very popular. I always wondered what Skyrim did in order to make people send Oblivion to oblivion. I just don't hear people talking about Oblivion anymore.
I remember when Majora's Mask came out people were still talking about Ocarina Of Time, or when Skyward Sword came out people still mentioned Twilight Princess. This was different, and because I didn't play the Elder Scrolls games, I never knew why.

Seeing as how 2016 marks Oblivion's 10 year anniversary, I thought it would be appropriate to suggest a thread dedicated to it.
I have spent more time with Oblivion than any other Elder Scrolls game, and in all honesty, it's one of the most entertaining games I've ever played. I say this not just because of its great gameplay and production values, but for how funny the game is. Oblivion has some of the quirkiest AI I've ever seen in a video game, and combined with the marvelous voice acting makes for some truly hilarious NPC conversations.
I love the magic system in Oblivion, although there were a few magical powers from Morrowind that didn't make the cut, which was disappointing. But hey, Oblivion let you craft your own spells, which was one of my favorite features in the game.
If I have any criticisms of Oblivion, it would be the character designs (namely the elves and kajit, which don't look nearly as cool as Morrowind's) and the way the game handles rendering the outdoor environments, which never seemed to load fast enough. Very annoying, but it doesn't ruin the experience.
I also am highly critical of Oblivion's ragdoll physics, which range from decent to unsatisfying to downright broken. I honestly don't know how they screwed this up so badly. Half Life 2 was made three years earlier and the ragdoll physics in that game were LEAGUES above Oblivion's in terms of accuracy, quality, and satisfaction.
I much prefer the PC version of Oblivion, because, as a magic user, trying to use magic with a gamepad during a fight just doesn't work at all. It's really meant to be played with a mouse and keyboard. Also, the PC version supports the use of mods, which help fix some of the game's issues, especially the ragdoll physics.
Overall, it's an outstanding game that still entertains me to this day. 10/10 I highly recommend it.

Oblivion is one of those games that didn't do anything for me, although it was a long time ago and I don't think I gave it much time either. I keep thinking I may give the series another shot one day, but who knows if I'll get around to it.

I played Oblivion for a while and I had two major gripes with it; the pace of the game and the impact of your actions.
For instance barely after starting the game you're chosen as the biggest hero of all time or something and join the Blades, which serve as the king's elite force and the empire's main intelligence unit. And this happens after barely completing a couple of main quests.
Then after everyone starts hailing you as the king of the losers you save a city called Kvatch and earn the title appropiate title of Hero of Kvatch and are told the city is going to be rebuilt. Only not really, the city is never rebuilt and your actions were for naught.
I also remember doing the thieves' guild quest and I actually had fun with that one, however at that point the main story line had beccome even more rushed and I had honestly lost my patience with the game. Maybe the best part of the game were the side quests but I don't really play The Elder Scrolls for the side quests, they're supossed to be the chocolate bits on top of the cake, NOT the whole cake.

I also only jumped into the series after Skyrim. I have heard great things about Morrowind, but Oblivion seems to be a low point for most fans.
While I have enjoyed my time with Skyrim, I'm pretty sure this style of game just isn't for me - you know, open world with millions of quests and a completely blank character that gets to do everything, passable (at its best) combat system mostly status-based, focus on crafting and collecting, no proper level design with very repetitive dungeons and little to no story connecting everything together. I'm not criticizing the wRPG genre, but I'm just saying its quality revels in how huge and detailed the fictional world is and how you are free to create your character as you wish - most people enjoy these things, but I prefer shorter action games with levels deliberately designed to test my abilities. While I do get impressed by a game like this for the hours I spend playing it, I don't feel the need to play other games in the genre. It's like how I feel about Musou - loved my time with Hyrule Warriors but have not much interest in playing other Musou games...
By the way, I just saw this today and it might be interesting for the fans of the series:
