I didn't want to make a big list, but if you choose other, you can always write it down, like Alien, Dead Island, Dead Nation, Dead Rising, Dead Space, Diablo, Dying Light, Doom, Until Dawn, etc..

Love me some Fatal Frame. After that, probably Castlevania.

Easy win for Silent Hill for me, the first and fourth games specifically changed my life for ever. I experience and appreciate fog, pocket lights and my apartment on a whole other level because of them.
I could make a long list of favorite horror games but some in particular not listed in the poll that need special mentions are Cold Fear on Xbox, Darkwatch and BloodRayne.

I chose "other": my favorite horror themed game series is the awesome GHOULS N' GHOSTS series, my favorite game in said series being Ghouls N' Ghosts on the Sega Genesis, which was a rare near-perfect port back in '89 I believe, and one of the system's first killer apps.
Honorable mentions go to the Maximo (Ghosts to Glory) series, which is set in the same universe as Ghouls N' Ghosts and is kinda like a 3D spiritual successor, and of course Resident Evil.
I noticed that there are also several other horror series that weren't mentioned in the OP, like Splatterhouse and System Shock.

Ghouls N' Ghosts is such a good one. I didn't write down everything because the list would had been too long, plus I doubt I would remember everything.
I wish they would make another 2D Ghouls N' Goblins, that's another dormant IP Capcom has.

For me it has to be Alan Wake with all it's DLC (which is free now by the way). Awesome game, it's like they took something that looks like a Stephen King novel and made it into a game.

I voted on Castlevania just because it's such a STYLISH game series, especially since Rondo of Blood. From SotN onwards, Ayame Kojima's designs (realized through a perfect pixel art), by mixing gothic and anime aesthetics, evoked a very "sensual horror" atmosphere that never fails to get my attention. I haven't played many games in the series (my wife, otherwise, is a HUGE fan), but I really appreciate what it tried to do, especially aesthetically. Its culmination is probably Order of Ecclesia, which I'm coincidentally playing right now.
Let me give a shout out not to a series, but to a company: Frictional. They made the Penumbra series, Amnesia and SOMA. They popularized many of the tropes every horror game uses nowadays, like basing horror games around stealth and completely dismissing combat - as seen prominently in Alien Isolation, another great game.

Would choose RE if it wasn't cheesy at times. Silent Hill for me, the mind-boggling difficult puzzles of the first game and the chilling atmosphere make it as terrifying as it is memorable.

I'm unfamiliar with the series, but with a title like "thief" I would not expect it to be horror. Isn't it kinda like Assassin's Creed? stratogustav I would LOVE a new 2D Ghosts N' Goblins, but Capcom is going to declare bankruptcy literally any moment now (I assume), so I don't think it will happen any time soon. ![:(](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/sad.png)
