This is one of those games which is on my to play list, and it's really high up there. But this game was never released for PC?! That is really weird. I guess Rockstar just hates PC since they always delay release or just don't release it at all. As for the sequel PC is not mentioned there either.

The Western game I have always wanted. If this wasn't a game I was playing, it would have been a movie that I would have loved to watch. One of the few games that makes finding things (and hunting) fun and not a chore. This game is one that I would sit someone down who doesn't like or never plays video games in order to experience it.
The best quote I heard when the game came out, "they got the ass on the horse perfect!"

I've never understood the popularity of this game. I remember when it came out and I was in high school, and my peers literally would not shut up about it. I had no idea today's generation had such an interest in the western genre, nor do I understand why.
I played the game and didn't think much of it. It was basically GTA 4 minus the vehicles, so it felt like there was less freedom to explore, and less people to kill/run over.
I'd much rather travel to the real american southwest that play this game.
Why is this game so popular?

I'm giving it a 4 because although I enjoyed the vanilla game immensely, Undead Nightmare is by far one of the most boring and annoying pieces of DLC I've ever played, I actually forced myself to complete it and I still don't understand why I did so.

My favorite TV show: My favorite actor: If you love Westerns, you will love this game. Undead Nightmare was great, too.

scipioafricanus I'm guessing you're a big fan of Westerns since you chose a Western game and your avatar is from a Western. What's your favorite movie?

I remember not being too interested in RDR on release, but I bought it and the DLC a year or two after. I'll admit, I only got interested after watching a handful of westerns on netflix. The game overall was very good, I loved the shooting and the selection of weapons, and the dead eye mechanic was a nice way to allow the player to do some of the crazy stunts that were seen in western films. The missions were good overall. There were some painfully boring ones no doubt, but there are plenty of missions that were modeled after scenes in western movies and they're plenty of fun. The framerate however is way too choppy and I think it hampers the gameplay, even if it's not by much. One of the things I didn't like about the game was, get ready for it, the story. It's less about the story itself and more about the characters and their interactions. I can't think of a single character I actually like in the story that had any significant role. The dialogue between characters felt overly snarky with little actual substance, especially the interactions between Marston and Abigail which were just painful and drawn out. I guess you can say it's become a staple of Rockstar by now but back then I hadn't really come to expect it yet. The voice acting is excellent though. Also, I feel like an idiot for just realizing what the poll at the top of every GotW was for. But this game was never released for PC?! That is really weird. I guess Rockstar just hates PC since they always delay release or just don't release it at all. As for the sequel PC is not mentioned there either. If I had to guess, it could've been due to some technical problems. Maybe the game's code was a mess and they had trouble porting it to PC. Other than that I got nothing.

winnersdontusedrugs it's usually the other way around. So that can't be the case can it? scipioafricanus is it even better than the Dollars trilogy and Once Upon a Time in the West?

It is a different type of Western than those. This is a traditional American Western before the change in film making that happened in the late 60s-70s (change in actual film used and political/philosophical changes). The movies you said are during and after that. They are also with the Italian influence, since they were directed by Sergio Leone. They are probably the perfect examples of those.
"Rio Bravo" is a character study that deals more with the ideal of American Rugged Individualism. John Wayne and Howard Hawks (the director) hated "High Noon" for its portrayal of its main character and the townspeople; Gary Cooper runs around begging for help, which is denied, only to be saved by his Quaker wife. Wayne's character does the complete opposite. For what it is worth, Quentin Tarantino says it is his favorite movie and judges his potential girlfriends on if they like it.
"Rio Bravo" along with "The Searchers" and "Red River" are the best examples of American Westerns.
