I played Hyrule Warriors!
I talked a bit about it in the "what are you playing now" thread, and I stand by my opinion: it's a good, well realized game, while the concept itself is meant to be repetitive and to offer fun in quick bursts. It's the kind of game that's easy to learn and doesn't have much to master, so you just play it every now and then. I really liked my time with HW, but I don't see myself playing more games from the series - well, maybe if they use a franchise that I really like.
Anyway, I see it less as a series/franchise, and more as a general mold in which you fit a franchise to get a quick game based on it. And I mean it in a good way: it works.
By the way, I've heard the first Fist of the North Star game is among the best ones. Has anyone tried it?

I'd say try Samurai Warriors 4 and if you don't get any enjoyment from either, the series isn't for you. Also, if you haven't try increasing the difficulty. I don't remember for this game particularly but a lot of them are stupid easy on the default setting.

Yep, I played Hyrule Warriors entirely on Hard and only died on the last few levels. Besides those, the game was a breeze. I got the impression that the entire franchise is like this - the enemies surround you but barely attack.

I rented Ultimate Warriors Orochi 3 on PS Now and it is great, I want to buy it for the PS3 because of the Dead Or Alive characters, and Ninja Gaiden, but it is still $50, so it feels kind of pricey, I had never seen it on sale.
On the Wii U I love Hyrule Warriors, it feels like it never ends, it is pure fan service, and the DLC is all good as well.
My buddy got the plat for Dynasty Warriors 6 Empires, those games are super fun on co-op, they are a lot of grinding though.

I have a lot of nostalgia for the DW series. I remember playing a demo of DW 3 on a demo compilation disc and immediately fell in love with it (which is funny because the demo was the Namnam stage with only 10 min limit and 3 characters: Zhao Yun, Huang Gai and Zhen Ji). Bought the game later and had a blast. I also own 5 (with both Empires and XL), 3 (with XL), 6, Warriors Orochi, Samurai Warriors I and II and DW Gundam I and II. Usually I divide the main series into the old and the new with 5 being the last of the old ones. I have 6 (which I've 100%-ed), and have played 7 and 8 since my brother has them. Never did like the newer ones. For me they improved stuff until 5, then things got weird and uninterested (for me at least). The Spin-offs are fun, but never as good as the main series. My favorite will always be 3, with 5 as a close second place. (And btw Cervantes try to play the old ones, especially DW 3, they are much harder than the newer ones.)

Balder - Thanks for the suggestion, mate! By the way, do you know which one of them has the Ninja Gaiden characters? The extra fan service might convince me to play it. Anyway, I was rewatching CGR's Fist of the North Star review (as I'm now curious about it) and it really looks cool - it seems to be slower and with less enemies than the others, playing more like a beat'em up than a spetacle fighter - maybe something closer to Anarchy Reigns than the proper DW series. I think I'll look out for it, since I also want to know more about Hokuto no Ken (never read the manga or watched the anime; would the game be a good entry point?).

Just a heads-up, that game hasn't got an English dub, just Japanese. It still has English subtitles though.

Balder - In japanese games, I always use the japanese voices w/ english subs anyway, with only a few exceptions (the Metal Gear series). So, no problem there!

It's mostly running around and defending your outposts because your wimpy soliders aren't capable of doing it themselves.

I might think about playing 3 again, I really recall liking it back in the day. Don't have a working PS2 right now though.

I remember playing the original fighting game and I thought it was pretty good at the time. I've played a few of the many other games in the same series and several other games like them but only a very tiny handful have been to my liking, like Demon Chaos on PS2 was really awesome, I love that game.
