Ugh, I can't stand these games, they play horribly, are completely unbalanced and have idiotic rules on how to win/lose forcing all fun and skill out of the equation, I guess for small children who don't have skills and only mash buttons it serves as pretty colors moving around on a screen but for anyone else I fail to see the appeal.
And I can't pretend it's fanservice games either as to date they sure as shit haven't had put any effort into having any of my favorite characters playable, some have been available but they don't play like they should so I don't count that as effort, they all play horribly no matter which one you pick anyway so it's at best a 3D model of a character you might like that plays nothing like you want it to.
Had they at least made the characters play similarly to how they play in their respective original titles rather than just having their attacks based on how they play it might have managed to spark my interest as different characters from different genres come together and battle it out is a cool idea, but they all play the same and the hypothetical potential for me to care is lost entirely.
I've played similar games like TMNT Smash Up on PS2/Wii and a Digimon game on PSX that I enjoyed though, mainly because they didn't mash together different characters from different genres, the characters playing similarly was thus a good thing as I expected them to be similar, all sharing the same origin, I also think they had better rules for how you win/lose and I found them to play better control-wise.
I've also played PlayStation Battle Royale which I must say sucked equally as much as the Smash Bros. games for the exact same awful reasons.

Around the time Melee came out the way Armored Core Raven describes it is exactly how I felt.
It was so popular that I saw people disregarding other gems of the time to dedicate time to this game.
The same thing happened with Tony Hawk, and later with Guitar Hero.
However when Brawl came out, the story missions, the stages design, and the soundtrack made me appreciate the franchise more.
Now I see it as a Nintendo Greatest Hits brawl melee kind of thing, and I enjoy it for that. Gameplay-wise I feel Nintendo offers better things elsewhere, but I do recognise the competitive side of it appeal.
So now I buy the games just for the temporary fix of the local multiplayer, to the point that I have collected all the Amiibos released for it so far.

Damn, Raven's brutal! I haven't played much of Melee, but love the franchise in general. The first Smash Bro.s on N64 was one of my favorite games of that generation. I know MeleeMonk likes Melee for some added depth in the game, but this isn't a series I associate with depth or even real strategy. For me, they're fun multiplayer games that anyone can pickup and play. Like a party/fighting game. The only thing I really remember about Melee was that you could play as Mewtwo. But I'm looking forward to the Maestro's review, no doubt.

Wow that's what I call a call out. Who says I never call people out Dan E. Kool ? I know those people. Those are Balder's lobbyists, wealthy donors, and special interest groups. I know those people. They take me out for ham sandwiches on weekday afternoons. I get along with those people. But Balder is like their puppet. They say "jump!" and he - Listen. I'm my own man. I do what I want. When I want to make a new topic, it's no problem. Believe me. I make the best topics. A couple weeks ago I made a topic about DooM. It got lots of views. The most replies. And in that topic, I labeled the ratings with probably the best words. No one else was doing that. 1 - Bad. 3 - OK. 5 - Tremendous. No one else was doing that. And now you look in the new topics and Balder is labeling... the ratings! And I get a lot of credit for that. But no one was doing that before me. So now you see Balder going around trying to be the big man. Doing his "call-outs." Give me a break.

Melee was good, and still the game a lot of Smash fans stand by. The new one for Wii U is my favorite though.

Once again Dan E. Kool doesn't understand the concept of time. A few weeks ago you made a topic about Doom? That was months ago! As for Smash Bros. I've only played the Wii one (Brawl I think). I like it. It's not my favorite fighter game, but it's sure fun as a party game, playing it casually with 3 other friends.

Melee is a pretty nice game. I like it's focus on movement and all the different mechanics it has, even if some of them weren't exactly intended. I also like how stages aren't just flat planes (most of the time anyway) and add an element of platforming and having to learn stage layouts somewhat similar to that of an arena FPS game. I'll admit though, I only liked the stages from Smash 64 and maybe a handful from Melee.
One of my gripes with it is the characters. A good chunk of them simply aren't fun to use or simply aren't interesting game design-wise to begin with, and goddamn is there a disgusting amount of clones. The sad thing is, the series never really fixed this problem after Melee. It seems like for every new entry and every new set of characters they add, they always keep the ratio of not fun characters/clones to worthwhile characters around the same imo.
I think the series would benefit from not trying to appeal to casuals so much. Then again, maybe it's fine that the series does that, considering how many """gamers""" I've seen bitch about how traditional fighting games are too hard and how special move inputs are unfair. I think it's up to a new series to bring some progress to the genre.
The problem with this is that people only seem to be attracted to the game because it's plastered all over with their favorite nintendo characters and it's hilariously easy to get into. If a new series starts with the intent of making the genre more competitive it will not only not have that edge, but it will also have to deal with the stigma of being a "smash clone" if it even remotely plays like something similar to smash (even though it's debatable if Smash is the first of it's genre to begin with)

I consider Melee to be the prime candidate for the title of "most hardcore game" that Nintendo has ever made, along with the F-Zero games and maybe one or two Fire Emblem titles.
Anyway, it's kind of shocking how much it improved on Smash 64's gameplay, variety, and just about everything else. Smash 64 was a terrific start to the series and still to this day is a great game, but Melee is where the Smash series really peaked. In terms of gameplay, there is SO much that was added, with new techniques like wavedashing, dash-dancing, air dodging, item catching, spot dodge, and side-specials (AKA side-B attacks), just to name a few.
There's literally twice as much variety in Melee than in Smash 64, too. It bumped the character roaster from 12 to 26 characters total. Some characters feel more powerful/useful than others, and there are several clones, but I haven't found a single character that felt frustrating to use (except maybe slow ass Bowser). There's a crapton more stages, too, many of which feel much more designed for fair play than Smash 64's hazardous stages.
The music is marvelous. And the graphics were absolutely excellent for an early Gamecube game, especially considering all the stuff that's going on screen at once, with slowdown being very rare and limited to only two stages when using four players (to my knowledge).
I actually preferred Smash 64 as a kid, because I didn't know about the advanced techniques, which are what makes Melee the transcending Smash title. When played casually, Melee isn't as fun for me as the other smash games, but thankfully I don't play casually any more. With the huge increase in speed to the gameplay, along with the advanced techniques, Melee is a formidable competitive fighting game, literally unmatched by the other Smash games in terms of just gameplay depth and learning curve.
I'm very saddened by the fact that Nintendo has severely neglected Melee fans in recent years. They've never re-released the game, and have since not allowed Sakurai to implement the advanced techniques from Melee to the new Smash titles.
For anyone who liked Melee's gameplay but was bothered by the low levels of character balance and variety, I highly recommend checking out Project M, which is a free, fan-made mod that unfortunately has been the target of prosecution by Nintendo to have it taken down. Last I checked, there was a download link on the Project M Smash Wiki page, but it may not be up anymore.
So in conclusion, I passionately love and play Melee. It's my second favorite game right after Paper Mario 64. It is PERFECT as far as I'm concerned.

I don't really like it. Floaty controls, a really weird input detection that almost feels like its input lag, the stage transitions are just ugh, it breaks the gameplay and some of the stage designs are questionable for a fighting game. Most importantly, i never liked any of nintendo's characters.

Used to be very into it in the Gamecube era. Played it with my friends all the damn time. Then recently we tried to get into it again and oh my god we sucked, we just got too used to the gravity and fighting style from Brawl and 4 I guess, either way ....

I don't really like it. Floaty controls... You must be mistaking it for Brawl. Melee's gameplay is most certainly NOT floaty.
