This game...
Somehow, I ended up with four retail disc copies of it. IT still puzzles me to this day.

You guys really know some very obscure games I have never heard about. You guys never stop surprising me with all that knowledge.

But it is PC only I'm pretty sure so not surprised not many from here seem to have any input on it. I haven't played it though, so that's all I have to add to this discussion. I've played some Unreal Tournament though.

Surprisingly, I never played any Unreal game. When I really got into pc games, Unreal had already turned into an exclusively multiplayer series, so I had no interest in that (although I still dabbled for sometime in Quake 3 Arena).

Lol, shit I was expecting at least someone to have played this game.
I'm not going to pretend there's too much of a story to spoil, but there's a handful of moments in the game that really stand out and are memorable to me. Without giving too much away, Unreal is a mostly singleplayer 3d shooter with huge levels and unique weapons and enemies. A good chunk of the weapons used in this game aren't your typical hitscan guns, and require a special kind of precision to hit your target. This is further cemented by the fact that most enemies can take a beating, and a decent portion of enemies can straight up dodge your shots if they have the opportunity. Unreal, unlike most fps games, doesn't throw a lot of weak mooks at you. Instead, it features enemies that almost seem like they're people you'd encounter in a multiplayer game of Quake or UT. This makes fights an adrenaline pumping affair, especially on your first playthrough. The levels are huge yet also intricate, holding plenty of secrets that you won't find on your first or even second playthrough. There's a good incentive to explore too, since you need to keep your supplies as high as possible to stand a chance the next time you encounter enemies, and you can even find some weapons earlier than usual if you're curious enough. The atmosphere of the game is great and it's easy to find yourself immersed in it to this day, even if it doesn't nail he feeling of being on an alien planet perfectly (since it feels a bit too much like earth to me, aside from certain places). The music is also 11/10 and one of the best soundtracks in anything period
If any of you guys are interested in playing Unreal, I recommend downloading the 277 patch and selecting Open GL renderer on your first-time startup of the game. Other than that there's no real problems getting the game to work on modern computers, which is nice considering there's a good chunk of games that came out after UT's release in 1998 that are a pain in the ass to get working on modern PCs.

winnersdontusedrugs - Nice review, mate! I've been playing a few older pc classics lately (Thief and Tomb Raider series), and your review really got me interested in trying Unreal too. How would you say it compares to Quake 1/2? Does it play better?

Nice, you also have to rate it since nobody else can really do so with a good conscience.

CervantesAs far as controls go they handle pretty similar, although Unreal has a dodge mechanic that will definitely come in handy. I wouldn't say that Unreal plays any better than Quake 1&2, it just plays differently. The Quake games have smaller and more compact levels, easier to use weapons, and more fodder-tier enemies. BalderWhoops my bad, I didn't know you could rate your own submissions.

I've only played the rest of the Unreal games, never the original. I know suprisingly little about it.

I decided to rate it, too. My conscience is fine by the way, Balder.
