This was a massive hit series. I always dreamed of having this game with an actual real electric guitar and somehow Ubisoft made it happen which I appreciate it, I have no idea why Activision didn't tried it themselves, but Rocksmith is quite fun.
Once the DLC age came out they made a lot of money selling tracks, but using a toy guitar never called my attention. Although I've remember seeing at some point a couple of mobile apps that do a good job in getting your own tracks in sinc or that at least had pretty good tracks themselves.
There was one I can't remember that offered the song Deep Unknown from Stratovarius. I remember enjoying that app on my phone despite not using an actual toy guitar because rhythm games are fun nevertheless.
Out of the actual Guitar Hero games I would say the one that had Through The Fire And Flames from DragonForce was my favorite one, as power metal songs in general are epic for electric guitar and perfectly suited for these kind of games.

Never played them, but definitely noticed the appeal.

It was the last song on GH3, but was also featured in GH Smash Hits. If that's the case then Guitar Hero 3 is the answer to your question as I never heard of Guitar Hero Smash Hits.

The only one I played was Guitar Hero 2 when my brother got it. I had fun with it but didn't get into it enough to buy any myself.

I bought GH2 for the PS2 when it came out. It was pretty fun, but I think that was mostly due to the hype surrounding it. Never got past playing on Medium and I quit playing it not that long after. Since my brother has always been interested in music, he in a way inherited GH2 and bought 3, Metallica, I and the 80's for the PS2.
Now skip forward to Fall of 2015 (about 10 years later); I'm moving to an apartment close to university and my roommates talks about buying a Rock Band set to play The Beatles Rockband. It sounds really fun to pick up a set of Rockband since we're 3 guys moving in, and we could play more often together. This guy has mentioned it many times but never took the initiative. So I bought it off a Facebook group the day I moved in. And we've been playing it every now and then since then. I've almost completed my Xbox 360 collection of Rockband/GH games. I'm currently only missing Rockband Green Day, which is an obscure one. It's a pretty fun series to play from time to time, but has flaws like over-saturation. I'd give it a 4/5.
My favorite ones a GH Van Halen and GH Smash Hits (or Greatest Hits depending on location). Van Halen has no bad tracks and is so fun to play. Smash Hits is a collection of the best songs from I,II, III and the 80's with an improved note layout (the original versions just feels weird compared to newer releases) and with added drum and microphone support.

Are you doing a master? I remember you saying you were done with your electrical engineering already.
Doing any kind of rhythm video game party is fun, I'm sure you guys will enjoy playing Rockland together.

EE had way to much programming, which I hated.

I was never too much of a fan of this series, though I'd join in at a friend's house as a group activity.

Nah, advanced mathematics teacher in high school. What is the age of consent in Norway? I say it because as a professor at least the students are legal. In High School you are basically playing with fire.
