Good series overall, I personally like 2 (the 90s style and nostalgia factor is strong in this one), 5 and Dark Resurrection, and I'd like to get hold of 6 and maybe 7 some day.
The original, 3, 4 and Tag are wildly overrated, they're still good, not amazing, but not bad by any means, just good and wildly wildly overrated, especially 3.
My favorite characters are Jack-5 (or any other Jack really, though 5 is my fav among them), Anna Williams (sexy hottie with a bazooka, I couldn't not love her even if I tried) and Bryan Fury.

I'll go with a solid average. By the time I played a Tekken game, I had already been playing Virtua Fighter 2. VF2 felt much faster, more complex and the realistic animation for the fighting moves looked way better. In comparison, Tekken was slower, floatier (although the VF2 jumps were terrible in this respect...), more based on memorizing combos and juggling your opopnent than on having quick reactions and a good strategy, and most important: Tekken always had absolutely abysmal character designs. It was neither the realistic style from VF nor the creative anime designs from Capcom/SNK, but something in between that just looked uncanny to me. Hell, I preferred (and still do) Dead or Alive and Soul Calibur over Tekken, so it was at the very bottom among the good 3d fighters. Maybe I would also put Last Bronx and Rival Schools above it if you asked me in the 90s.
So why am I going for average instead of bad/horrible? Because it's still a very competent series and, in the 90s, was miles above the likes of Battle Arena Toshinden (bad) or the barely playable Criticom (horrible).

My favorite character is Lili. I don't put wall decorations on my bedroom, but I was very close with her.
I do like Tekken more than Virtua Fighter and Soulcalibur, but I always recognize that when it comes to 3D fighters it is Virtua Fighter the one influencial.
Virtua Fighter simply started it all, and a lot of people don't recognize it. Yu Suzuki has reinvented the industry in general more times than anyone wants to really acknowledge.
When it comes to Tekken I love the series in general. I do prefer 2D fighters a lot more, but I don't think there is a single Tekken entry that I don't like.
What I would say about the Tekken series is that unlike other IPs in any genre, in my personal opinion they do get better with each new entry. Meaning Tekken 1 is my least favorite while Tekken Tag Tournament 2 is my favorite.
That is very strange to me because other than PES and Gran Turismo, I don't really know any other IP that just keeps getting better. They usually get worse or at the least alternate between good and not so good. So I really applaud that of Tekken.

In regard to some of the new comments I will say I like most 3D fighting games better than most Tekken games, as for other early 3D fighters like Toshinden 1 and 2 and Criticom for example, I love them to bits, they're great, they're great fun and I enjoy playing them a lot, whereas Tekken 1-3 I only truly enjoy playing 2, occasionally, and like I said before there's a lot of 90s nostalgia to blame for that as all three early Tekkens are almost indistinguishable otherwise.
So while I think all Tekkens are fundamentally good games, only very select few go beyond that and reach actual greatness, the rest are merely good in a genre where there are plenty of truly great games to compete with, so as a series it's good but overrated with some truly great entries that stand out from the rest.
There are tons of fighting games I feel are average and mediocre, I'd say Tekken is better than all of them, so I don't agree with the average score for the Tekken series, it's overrated but it's still good, definitely not average.
I agree with the style being in the middle between the two extremes of "normal" and "anime" though, but that's what makes it stand out a bit and have it's own identity, it's not so generic it becomes boring but it's not so over-the-top it puts off everyone but the most dedicated weeaboo gaijins either, I'm generally okay with most Tekken characters, they feel a bit more loved by their developers overall than characters from most other series do.

I'm not huge into Tekken out of personal preference but I still think it's a good series. Even though it's inconsistent in it's quality, the better entries in the series (like 5,TTT 1/2, etc) are a lot of fun. One consistent gripe I have with the series is that most of the character designs are just straight garbage, or forgettable at best. I'll give Heihachi and maybe Miguel a pass though, just because I like them.

A tale of domestic issues and rebellious youth. I love tekken for the story alone pretty much, plus Jin Kazama is a badass fellow, i was learning Karate when i was played Tekken 4 back in the day. I started with Tekken 3 like most people, but i can't remember much from it. My favorite Tekken game is Tekken 4 just because of the story and atmosphere, then comes Tekken 6 which is when i became serious about the gameplay mechanics. Tekken 7 doesn't look that good imo, too many dumb design decisions, namely the inclusion of AKuma and Rage Arts (Super attacks from SF4), and the music is just garbage.
listen to this from Tekken 4, then listen to that garbage from tekken 7

Great series! Although I prefer Soul Caliber for its art direction and fantasy-based imagination, Tekken is none-the-less a kick-ass & super fun series. I've spent the most time with Tekken 3, although Tekken Tag Tournament 1 on PS2 is still my favorite. I remember loving Tekken 3 so much when I first played it at my friend's house way back when. It had the same fun-factor as Soul Calibur. Lots of awesome and diverse fighters to choose from, loads of gameplay options, great gameplay, so on. I honestly don't have any problems with the ones that I've played, but I don't have enough experience with the series overall to award it a perfect 5/5, so it gets a 4 from me.

Just remembered that I did play a Tekken game. Tekken 3, on the original PlayStation. A guy had brought his PlayStation to a party and we played Tekken way into the early morning. But that's 20 years ago now and I haven't played it since. The only thing I can remember is that you could fight as a panda, which of course I did. It was fun, from what I remember, but a lot of that was from being with my buddies. Games can seem better depending on who you play with.
