17 hours and no comments?? Man, where the hell is everybody? :/
Goldeneye is an outstanding Bond film and one of the definitive action flicks of the 90s. It singlehandedly revived the James Bond franchise, but also marked a change in direction for the series; this was the turning point in which the Bond franchise become more action-focused, although in Goldeneye there were still plenty enough gadgets and spy stuff to feel like a Bond film should.
I remember being so disappointed to learn that Mark doesn't care for the film when I watched his review of Goldeneye 64. He's probably the only person I've encountered who prefers the game over the film. Besides, compared to modern Bond films like Skyfall, Goldeneye is far more venerable, intelligent, and memorable.
Great villains, incredible action sequences (the tank chase, the train scene, the opening sequence, etc.), excellent production values, great soundtrack...it's an all around awesome Bond film, one of my absolute favorites. Sure, the plotting is extremely implausible at times, but watching it I was having too good of a time to notice, even on subsequent viewings.
I rate it a 5/5. Truly a first rate Bond picture.

I saw this film back in the day and I remember liking it a lot. Probably not as much as I loved the game. But those are very different things. You can't really compare. However it has been so long that I can definitely watch it again and it will likely feel like new.

The only good Brosnon Bond movie. It's a damn shame they wasted him on that slew of garbage Bond movies after GoldenEye. He really had potential to be the greatest.

I'm currently watching all of the Bond movies since I haven't watched them all, and today I watched this movie, and wow do I disagree with the Pub on this one:
"GoldeneEye, the Bond movie that was in development hell for a while and made one of the best Bonds quit the franchise. So a new movie, a new Bond actor, how did Pierce Brosnan fare? Well, if the movie was not so awful, maybe it would be easier to judge his performance. GoldenEye is often said to be one of the better Bond movies, but I cannot for the life of me see how anyone can prefer this over a myriad of the other films. There a couple of things I liked in it like the opening sequence. It was cool, but had an over the top implausible ending. The opening credits are perhaps the best in any Bond movie since Goldfinger and the tank chase sequence was pretty fun. Now all the fucking awful moments. The hacking, my fuck, the hacking. It is the 90's alright, so we need hacking to be the star of every god damn plot device. Let us add one of the worst Russian accent hacker boys to the cringe pot and we got ourselves screen disaster. The female henchman is the worst henchman in all of these movies. She gets sexual pleasure from squeezing people to death with her thighs. This is something I could expect from a B-movie, not a Bond movie. Sean Bean is a great actor, but his character fucking sucks man. This guy is supposed to be close to Bond and have had all of these moments together with him, but he has never once been mentioned and he did not seem that close to him in the opening sequence. It was all too obvious too that he would return as a villain, although they never bothered to explain how he survived. Also his plans were only briefly mentioned at the end of film. The Bond girl was also pretty bad, and she only added to the feminist overtones this movie has, which only feels cringeworthy to me. Even the music is subpar as aside from the theme, all we get is this 90's techno nonsense. I actually hate to say it, but I think this is the worst Bond of them all up to this point, even beating out Live and Let Die to the throne of shit. Such a disappointment." 1.5/5 Shit Bond.

Balder please do the James Bond fandom the world a big favor and drop dead, because you are clearly not a Bond fan. Anyone who thinks that Goldeneye is worse than Daniel Craig era sacrilege like Skyfall, which had no gadgets, no tricked-out spy car, a totally un-sexy, politically correct Bond girl and a deranged, Moriarty rip-off of a villain is clearly not in a position to toss out objectives about the older entries in the series.
Balder, you are the millennial cancer killing the James Bond franchise. Congrats on your failure. It must suck to be a loser like you.

There's no need to wish somebody dead because they don't like the movie you like (and I thought I was passionate about movies). I consider myself a fan of the series, but that has only come recently as I hadn't watched most of them until now, and I'm still missing some, like all of the Daniel Craig ones except for Quantum of Solace, which I remember not liking and it was probably the reason why I've held off watching the newer ones until now.
Aside from the wishing me an early grave stuff, what I find fascinating about your comment and your views on the Bond franchise as a whole, is just how hypocritical the whole situation is. James Bond is literally the opposite of you dude. Bond is a smooth operator that makes woman fall like flies in the wake of his mere presence. You're the most repulsive human being I feel like I know on a personality level. You say that you hate a politically correct Bond girl. Fuck dude, you're the one who's into that kind of shit with all of your wokeness and shit. Then you blame me and my generation for ruining Bond despite me never supporting any of the new Bond movies, and it's hilarious since you're a millennial yourself. Then you call me a loser, but the only loser here is the guy everyone kind of cuts some slack for since they obviously have some serious mental problems that have undermined their entire real life existence that they continually blame everyone of the internet for. At this point I wonder if it's some fringe fetish you have to go the nearest McDonald's only to sit there all day on their WiFi to take your anger at innocent people on the internet. For the most part I feel sorry for you, but for a dickless betacuck clown, you sure sometimes can be annoying, but then again you probably don't have that many pleasures in life, so I might as well give you the sick pleasure of expressing your retarded ass bullshit on this site and just laugh about it when I show my friends this post. So in the end, what I'm trying to say is:

I am going to disagree a bit. This movie came out after a long hiatus for Bond, from what I remember. At the time, Timothy Dalton's "License to Kill" was more of the "Dirty Harry" version of Bond. Nothing wrong with that, and I enjoy it more so now. But it was a far departure from the Roger Moore version which I grew up with. GoldenEye was a return to that with a mix of the smoothness of the Connery one.
I am going to say this is the "best" of the Brosnan ones simply because it has the best villain of the 4: evil Bill Gates is lame, North Korea was kinda a joke, and guy with bullet slowly going into brain/crazy girlfriend. What makes a good bond movie is a memorable villain. Without that, it can quickly get to "meh."

Spirit Bomb - I thought Skyfall was mostly ok. The real stinker in Craig's era is Quantum of Solace, that one was a disappointment (especially coming after Casino Royale, which I found to be pretty good). As for GoldenEye, I only watched it at the time of its release and enjoyed it a lot (the other Brosnan movies were not good, though). I have to watch it again to see if it holds up. By now, I think the N64 game is more highly regarded than the movie itself, which is quite impressive for a licensed 90s game.
