Tokyo Beat Down! Thanks to Mark's top 10 games of 2009, I was encouraged to check out this obscure "beat'em up" title for everyone and their mother's favorite handheld. Everything about this game reeks of charisma: specifically, there is not a dull character in the entire game, much better than in a lot of our protagonist-driven popular media. The fighting/action is good and bad; on the one hand, enemies gang up on the player making it more tough than it needs to be but the system is also diverse enough to keep you covered and spruce up the gameplay. The core game is short (and sweet) as it needs to be, otherwise, it runs the risk of getting boring, but players who invest a little more time and exploration into the various districts of the city will be rewarded with power-ups and potentially discover the true end boss. Cinematic, colorful and just plain badass, Tokyo Beat Down lets players "beat them down" in style via a palatable plot that progresses in the heat of the moment thereby earning a whole-hearted recommendation and CGR verification from yours truly. 5 Tokyo stars out of 5 and a must have for your (3)DS!

I don't have many DS games but of the ones I do, it's one of my favorites, especially for some good laughs.

I have this too actually, but never invested the time to really get into it. The star of the game was supposedly the cheesy (re)writing, not so much the game itself...
Was just reminded of it after many years by your topic here. Took it out and gave it a whirl. So wierd... Didn't get very far though... Will give it another go in a bit!

Ah yes, the cheesy writing is a star in and of itself but I prefer to view the game as a whole package with memorable characters, upbeat music, simple yet efficient cinematography, facial ID cards which facilitate cheesy character interaction and a viable combat system even if it is a bit hampered by frequent player beat-downs. Sometimes, you just have to know how to take a beating! Hope you enjoy what more you play and find it a fun down time expenditure.

Have wanted this game for a while, just haven't gotten around to picking it up yet. It looks like a lot of fun!
