I noticed no one has made a Sonic Mania thread yet, so I figured it was about time. This is a game I'm very interested in, so I'd love to hear your thoughts on it, for those of you who have actually played it.

People were talking about it on the what game have you finished, but having its own thread is good. The game looks amazing all together. I really hope for a Switch physical release, but it looks is download only, or maybe I just have not seen a physical copy yet.

I want it but I'm also hard-pressed to drop 20 dollars on a digital game. I'll be waiting for the price drop and then it's mine!

I bought it on release and wasn't wild about it on my 1st playthrough. The subsequent playthrough was alot more fun though, but I still haven't bothered playing it again in awhile.

Looks super fun. But there's so much backlog to play for me (plus there might come a physical release if I wait long enough).

Dan E. KoolBasically it was just a bunch of little peeves, be they in the level design, an artistic choice, boss design, etc., that weren't much to complain about on their own. The thing is they kept piling up as the game went on and it got to the point where I just couldn't stand to play the game for more than 15-20 minutes at a time. Classic Sonic games almost always get better on subsequent playthroughs, but I can't remember the last time I was this displeased after a 1st playthrough of a classic Sonic game, apart from a select few romhacks.

winnersdontusedrugsFunny you should use that word, Romhack. That's kinda what this game is, isn't it? An official romhack?

I actually bought it on Steam. Review coming soon. With Sonic 4 being an underdeveloped flop (seriously, you think they would've patched the physics by now!), SEGA may have been wise to outsource the creation of new 2D Sonic games to people who care about their mascot than they do. Particularly this guy called Christian Whitehead who rebooted Sonic CD for them. This time, Robotnik and his posse of Egg Robos get their hands on something called the Phantom Ruby and it's up to Sonic, Tails and Knuckles to stop them. No Amy, no Original the Character, just the originals. Yes, it's another rehash, but with new level layouts and new Special Stages, it's like playing with a fresh set of eyes. The world is a bright, lighthearted place similar to that of Felix the Cat (who's got more in common with Sonic than you think), mixed with a little grit at the same time. It starts off with Green Hill Zone, as usual (I know GH was the very first zone in the Sonic franchise, but really?!). The animations are obviously more fluid, from the swings, to the rotating spike logs and the rings themselves. But, rather than the first boss being an eggcraft with a swing ball, it's TWO swing balls swinging together, and you have to hit them when they're spikes are retracted. Robotnik's machine at the end of Act Two is...this guy again: There are also new elements as well as a mixture old. Second zone is Chemical Plant, with a whole new set of chemicals for you to navigate with. That bit with the moving blocks and pink water is there too, but the water rises immediately. Robotnik's fight puts you into a game of Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine. If you ever passed stage one or two of that, you'll settle this fight faster than you can say "snooPINGAS usual, I see!" or "HaPENIS is always more enjoyable when it's based on the misery of millions!". But it's not all rehashed levels. Third zone, is an entirely new Party City theme: Studiopolis. It starts out in the city before moving into a Zentradi-sized recording studio, complete with giant Lotto machines, giant reels and falling stage lights. Another is Press Garden, another level with a Zentradi-sized newspaper printing press inside an old building, before moving out to a frozen Japanese garden. Oh, did I mention phase 1 of the Metal Sonic fight has him summoning little Silver Sonics from Sonic 2 on the Master System? (Silver Sonic, that guy on the left) Special stages are harder to come by. In S3&K, there would be 3 to 5 you can find. Now, there only seems to be one or two, so you'll have to be searching every nook and cranny for them. For that reason, I'm playing as Knuckles. However, if you want to enjoy the game, just don't worry about them. After all, if you check the Time Attack menu, you'll see there are a lot of levels. Also, the developers may have gone with this route to add some replayability by not letting you get all the emeralds so easily on your first playthrough. But what's in them? A UFO running away with your emerald. Collect blue orbs to speed up and rings to add to the timer. Watch out for spike balls and falling off the stage, though. The SFX are old school as you'd expect. The jazzy music is good, but it might grate on you after a while. And it's a shame they couldn't get Michael Jackson on board for this... At the end of a day, Sonic Mania is just a dose of retro megamix that reinforces what we already know: Classic Sonic is classic! But, the big question is: can Sonic Forces give Modern Sonic his due? Being a Sega fanboy, I personally hope he steamrolls Mario Odyssey.

Dan E. KoolYou can kind of say that, but at the same time Sonic Mania has it's own game engine and has a lot more functionality than what is possible for a romhack. Sure it was possible for romhacks to add stuff like hub worlds, new abilities/characters, etc. but I don't think some of the stuff done in Sonic Mania was possible to do in a romhack. Being a Sega fanboy, I personally hope he steamrolls Mario Odyssey. I'm a Sega fanboy too but looking at them both I don't think that's gonna be the case. I could see Sonic Utopia being better but that's just a fan game.

centipede - Nice review, mate! It was very explanatory. Are you playing the PC version or a console release? I haven't played it yet, but the general impression I get is that the engine is basically what a Saturn 2d Sonic game would've been (more animation frames, more colours, a little more complexity in the stages), with the added benefit of being in widescreen. Going by the gameplay videos from before the release (haven't watched any new one to avoid possible spoilers), they rehashed some stuff, like centipede says, but even in these cases they added new sections to the levels. In one of the Green Hill trailers, I specifically remember some parts of the level being totally new. All in all, the response to the game has been very positive, so I'll certainly get it down the line (right now, my backlog is too full and my wallet too empty). I've heard the PC version had some problems at release (someone at Sega decided to f*** the release by adding Denuvo DRM and it supposedly caused some performance issues), but most of them were patched out; as I'll probably go for this version, it's better to wait a bit so they'll have released all the necessary patches by then.

I already commented about this game in the finished games thread, but a tl,dr of what I said there is that I can't recommend Sonic Mania more than previous Sonic games. I can say it is better than Sonic 4 (and better than the first Sonic game by proxy), but still not as good as any of the other classics or Sonic Rush.
Considering how some weeks have passed and I haven't loaded the game since finishing it once, I'm not sure if the hype can be justified.
