That NES version according to everyone that was there, was a massive hit at the time, but some how people forgot about it because it was a very early NES game, it was a very influential game as well.
Well, I wasn't there but I still remember people refferring to this game heavily through out the 90s, so it really was a big deal.
However despite that it came out around the time the movie came out. I'm not sure if this Capcom game is licensed together, or that they are their own thing individually.

I think the 2600 version of this game is one of the most fair Atari games. It's rewarding but remains challenging. Good controls and good graphics. I think it was Activision who ported it, the masters of Atari 2600 games.

It was one of the biggest hits of 1985 and kicked off a new era in the arcades of detailed graphics and more complex gameplay, along with 1942, Gauntlet, Gradius and Hang-On which saw players quickly lose interest in vector games like Star Wars and Tempest, and variations of classics like Pac Man jr and Super Pac Man. Ikari Warriors followed a year later, and games like After Burner, Double Dragon and Shinobi the year after that. Definitely a landmark game (although considering all this it makes 1982's vertically scrolling Xevious even more impressive)

I have the arcade version on my PS3 through the Capcom Arcade Cabinet, it was a big hit, I remember how big the NES version was as well, still years later, well into the 90s. Maybe deep inside the filmmakers felt the hype and went with it, even if they didn't make the clear connection. After all, the game is the perfect evolution of Berzerk, Frenzy, and Robotron 2084, the pioneers in the genre.

It's definitely a good game I need to put more time into. I remember last I played I didn't get very far.
