It seems finishing games was particularly difficult for a number of us this year but if you'd like, feel free to share the games you did get through this year and maybe a quick blurb about them.
Resogun (PS4) - a friend gifted this shooter to me when I first got the PS4 and this year, I finished the adventure mode on every difficulty. Visually appealing blended with invigorating "music" (?) and a unique shooting system makes it easy to get into and worth playing.
Chrono Trigger (DS) - hailed as a grandaddy of RPGs, this one lived up to its accolades with a unique time travel system and settings from the apocalypse to prehistory and everywhere in between, the game keeps things fresh. Very much worth playing for DS owners.
Journey (PS4) - overrated "artistic" walking simulator. Harsh? Yes. Great looking game with some orchestral influence but as per substance, the game is lacking. Feel free to disagree, I stand by my opinion.
Etrian Mystery Dungeon (3DS) - really enjoy the mystery dungeon sub-genre and this is a nice addition that doesn't dwell too much on the story but lets you dig right into the adventuring and combat system. The post-game content is where stuff gets really good. The music could have been better but all-in-all, there are some nice features, especially with class system.
Sonic 3D Blast (Saturn) - a gorgeous remake of the game about 15% of Sonic fans asked for but that most people can agree makes great adjustments. Isometric is a hard sell but I feel the Saturn does it justice in a way most systems don't.
Fire Emblem Echoes (3DS) - this one got chastised for shallow enemy combat but I found a lot of enjoyment in other areas including the characters, the weapon system, and 3D Dungeon segments. Felt somewhat SMT IV-esque.
Majora's Mask (3DS) - I'm super biased but I love this game and the 3D port brings out the best in the already great game.
Kirby: the Crystal Shards (N64) - played it 15 years ago but I had to do it again and go to 100% completion. Was it worth it? Yes. Some crystals are hard to attain but I enjoyed the overall experience.
Sonic Mania (PS4) - very faithful (almost overly) for any fan of the 16-bit era hedgehog titles. Don't know if it'll bring in new fans of the series but it's the Sonic game fans have been direly waiting for that only a fan-team could deliver (sadly).
Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse (3DS) - as grossly addicting as the former SMT IV if not more. Many improvements including combat / party mechanics, greater cohesion behind the "choice" system and an intricate plot that branches nicely from the already great original (except about halfway between). This is a fantastic compliment to the original title.
Here are some games I played and almost finished this year:
Yooka-Laylee (PS4) - I got 115 / 150 Pagies and only needed 100 to fight the final boss but I never did. I think I enjoyed the collecting aspects more and what was frustrating was that those last 30 or so felt nearly unattainable. I ought to go fight that Tycoon though just to say I beat it.
Dragon Quest VIII (3DS) - got halfway. The magician is an incredible enemy and it required a bit much grinding for me but I also stopped because I own the PS2 version and feel that version may just be more definitive. I may return to my halfway marker though so we'll see.
Banjo-Kazooie (N64) - You know, I've never actually beaten this game? Played it so many times though. If I enjoy the collecting in Yooka Laylee, I adore it in Banjo Kazooie. The system makes so much sense: follow the music note trail, collect jiggies, fight a boss in every world and all of that is built into the world exploration. I may prefer the sequel but I will finish this one sometime soon, no doubt!
That's all I can really think of, looking forward to what you come up with, maybe I'll get some ideas of what to play next
