I still love the game and play it from time to time. This and Mortal Kombat got me started on fighters and to me SFII feels like it has aged much better.

Spirit Bomb I mean that Cammy is one of the weaker characters on the roster. As for fighting games I consider unbalanced, some that stick out to me would be MVC2, SVC Chaos, 3rd Strike, Melee . I actually like most of these games though. I'm not sure I would exactly consider SSF2T the benchmark for balancing, but I think what helps make it so balanced is that every character can actually be hilariously overpowered in their own way. Regarding Melee, I play it competitively, and it doesn't strike me as terribly unbalanced. In fact, just recently I watched a match between the world's top Fox player (with Fox being the best character in the game, according to popular opinion) and the best Pikachu player (Pikachu being a high tier character). And the Pika player won! Look: So yeah, I think Melee is quite misunderstood in terms of balance. It's an extremely skill-based fighter, and since the skill gap is so enormous, an amazing low/bottom tier player can easily trump a lousy top/high tier player. Proof:

That is exactly what I love about 6th gen fighters in general. That is why it is to me the golden age of fighters and coincidentally it was the last Arcade gen in the West. That is exactly what made titles like Mark Of The Millennium and New Age Of Heroes so damn popular. Also there were always scenarios where low tier characters successfully defeated top tier characters even while the player behind the top tier character was notoriously skillful. The reason behind it is what I mentioned before: Never underestimate the meta game when it comes to fighters.

It's ironic since the fighting game genre began to fade in popularity when the 6th gen began. I don't remember it getting popular again until Street Fighter 4 came out.

I would say Marvel Vs. Capcom 2, Capcom Vs. SNK 2, and Street Fighter III were the last big hits until Street Fighter IV was released 8 years later. The genre just like the arcade culture fade away along side the Dreamcast.

I suppose this is true only if we don't take 3D fighting games into account (which is something I forgot to specify), since series like Tekken, DoA and Soul Calibur were still popular. If was mostly the 2D subgenre that waned in popularity during that time.

Don't get me wrong, they do belong on professional competitions as well, but no with the hype of 2D fighters like let's say Melee for example.
