So a lot of you don't know this, but my PS2 slim died years ago and that left me wanting another PS2, so I bought an original phat PS2 from good old pub-goer Imperial Khador. It works great (thanks again, Khador) but I've heard the original model PS2s will break if you play too many CD-games (ex. PS1 games) because of some weird thing where the laser has trouble switching between disc formats. So this means I don't feel comfortable playing PS1 games, which sucks because I have about a dozen of them in my collection, longing to be played. I refuse to play them on my PS3 because of how terrible the visuals and input lag are on my 16:9 LCD TV.
So, as a result, I'm thinking about buying a PS1, especially since they're so dirt cheap to pick up.
I've got some questions, though, specifically for people who have had experience with owning a PS1:
-Should I go for the PSOne or the original brick model? The newer PSOne seems to be the objectively superior model from what I've heard, but I've noticed they tend to cost significantly more.
-Is it true that the first model PS1s are prone to overheating?
-Is there anything else I should know before buying a PS1?

There is a lot of PS1 games I want. My PS3 plays them, and sadly many of the good ones were never available digitally on the PSN, some are, but many are missing. My brother still keeps our PS1s and all 3 are still working. I don't have access to them, but he would let me borrow one if I ask him. I still love the PS1 intro for games. I like it more than the PS2 intro.

Honestly I would just pick up another PS2 to play PS1 games unless you're really nostalgic for the full PS load screen. A fair amount of PS1s had mod chips installed, so later games won't play on them if you're unlucky enough to unknowingly get one.
There is a compatibility issue, but it's a tiny amount of PS1 games that don't display properly when played on a PS2. Mostly old arcade compilations have trouble outputting video on a PS2 like the one with 720.
You can run a PS3 to a CRT with standard composite cables to play PS1 as well.

I never noticed any overheating issues with my old PS1. I think I had a SCPH-5501 model, because it had a single port for the component/composite connections (instead of 3 RCA jacks), but I believe it still had the parallel I/O port. I don't recall ever having to turn mine upside down to correct skipping/stopping issues, like so many seemed to have. Those little PSones are supposed to be quite nice though, so if you find it at a good price, I'd say go for it. That said...if your main concern about using your PS3 for PS1 games is input lag, there are things you can do to address that. First, when playing PS1 games on the PS3, you could switch from an HDMI connection to a composite or component analog connection. The fat and slim PS3 models have the same composite/component connection as the PS1 and PS2. If you have an 4:3 TV you'd be using for a PS1 anyway, it would just be a matter of moving the PS3 over and connecting it with the analog cables. If you're concerned about any input lag from the PS3 wireless controllers, you could just pick up a PS1/PS2 to USB adapter for a few dollars on eBay. Once connected, they don't need any further setup. I had one for a while that I was using the odd time I needed a 4th controller.

An original PS1 model easily costs much less than a PS2 slim. If it means saving $40, then I'm more than willing to take that trivial risk.

Nah, unless you want that little screen, don't get a PSOne. Get another PS2 instead. I bought mine retail for $40.

PS2 durability is questionable if you don't use it often. On the other hand the PS1 can be ignored for quite some time and it will still work. That said having both libraries is a total win. The PS2 library is perhaps one of the richest libraries there is.

You can find a PS2 at thrift stores for $10-20. Catching a popular console at a thrift store is like finding a needle in a hay stack. Out of all the countless times I've visited the various thrift stores in my town, I've never once encountered a game console, let alone a PS2. The closest I've come to finding a game console was one time when I saw a Nokia N-Gage at one of the stores.

I still have my original PS2 that was bought in the year 2000 that has been playing both PS2 and PS1 games for nearly 20 years, whereas the 10 first years it was played daily. That thing won't roll over of you play PS1 games on it. Don't buy another console just for that.

His concern about the PS3 is apparently lag time over HDMI, and that he doesn't like how the picture upscales to his 16:9 tv. That's why I suggested hooking up via analog RCA or component cables to an older television when playing PS1 games rather than buy a separate PS1. Should resolve both upscaling and input lag concerns.
