With the resurgence in "miniature" consoles, it's a surprise that Nintendo's mini prototype for the Wii failed so miserably.
Geez, I wrote up a storm about this system back on the old CGR page creating the vault page, writing 2 community reviews, one longer review and filming one of my first Youtube videos. This console had me more conflicted than any romantic relationship in my life!
Regardless, it's been a system I've been hard-pressed to move on from; I guess you could say "I want that old thing back" and when I get a Wii craving, the mini is always there to serve my needs.
I would like that it were just a bit less cumbersome to set up and maybe that I got the mental satisfaction out of true HD quality (even a model 1 Genesis outshines it in that department [lol]), but I got to say, I'm not really going into Wii games looking for the most professional pixel quality anyway.
3 stars out of 5.

I agree with your review. The lack of features from the original Wii is a real bummer. Plus I never liked consoles where you open the compartment to insert the disc.
The think looks great on the outside until you find out about all that you are missing, like the Virtual Console games and the entire GameCube library.

Oddly, one of my roommates has one of these, but I'm fairly sure it is only used for Wii fit.
I quite like the design of the case, and I've always been find of top loader disc-based consoles, since there is one less set of moving parts to fail.
Beyond that though, I don't really see anything to recommend it.

Fortune Street! I agree with your love for that one, teddykongcountry. My wife and I had countless matches against each other, and damn were they heated. The Wii did have a lot of shovel ware, but it also had a lot of great gems. We should probably start a "best Wii games" thread here, because the system is so damn cheap to collect for. (By the way, the RPGs you mentioned are all amazing. Do you have a copy of Xenoblade that wasn't artificially jacked up in price? If you're up for suggestions, I'd add The Last Story to your list too.) Do you think this rendition of the system will last longer than the original? Usually "mini" versions have newer components, so they can last longer. Atari 2600 JRs started that trend. I've always wanted to check this version out, but I found the $99 price point to be laughable at the time, since I already had the original.

I like that color combo. Great retrospective, Ted.

Thanks guys! This system is certainly a blast from the past but I feel it may have been born too prematurely. If this system came out now for a better budget price, people might have been more inclined to buy it.
I'm a fan of the top-loader style. I'm inclined to believe that this is a simpler option than an internal hard drive such as is found in the original Wii models but I could be mistaken. My PS1 has been working since 1996/7 so I have no issues with the make.
Let's see that Wii gems thread! I'd be happy to contribute.

I FINALLY found a decent price on Shiren the Wanderer so I'm waiting for that one to get shipped, Baroque is another title I've been piqued towards and then I also know of a few Rune Factory titles as well as a Tales game. I haven't yet acquired Xenoblade but it seems the price has dropped significantly online going as low as 40 dollars for a sealed copy. For as low as that is, it doesn't compare to Xenoblade Chronicles X which is around the ten dollar price point.
