Are you using a multimeter? I don't have one. How do I use it anyway? Also, is it possible to cut the cord and put the plug end on the new tip?

Multimeters are rather cheap, so this video could help. A lot of people already have them in their tool sets, so I thought you may have one. There are Ethernet testers set up for just testing Ethernet cables. A quick Amazon search showed a few of them going for less than $10. This one looks decent: Vastar Network Cable Tester
