Balder I'm not sure very many people on this forum own an atari 2600, so they're probably not familiar with someone like him (I know I'm not). I try to choose designers that most people know about. Cervantes If you found Skyrim's magic to be underwhelming then you should consider trying Oblivion, or better yet, Morrowind. I've heard terrible things about skyrim's magic and I know for sure that it doesn't have spellcrafting like Oblivion and Morrowind did. I can't stress how much better being a mage is in the previous ES games. All of the previous games also had true RPG mechanics (except maybe Redguard). Also, comparing the Elder Scrolls to LoZ is like comparing apples to oranges, since the pre-Skyrim ES titles are so radically different from Zelda in just about every respect, especially in narrative and gameplay. ES has never had any puzzle solving to speak of. It's always been much more realistic when it comes to exploration. Magic in Oblivion was trash, too. You've played Oblivion? While I don't think it was nearly as fun to use magic in Oblivion as it was in Morrowind, it was still very enjoyable for me. Aside from the nerfing of some spells and the removal of others, I really don't have any significant complaints about the way Oblivion handled magic. It was still the most OP type of combat when custom spells are taken into account.

It was still the most OP type of combat when custom spells are taken into account. I had to use a host of mods in order to make magic seem like a viable thing to use. I played the shit out of it vanilla, and there seemed to be a point when you got to a certain level, new magic spells would cost an impossible amount of MP to use, yet the damage was minuscule, if I’m remembering the game correctly. I actually liked Oblivion. Skyrim was crap. I don’t get the live that game gets. Same with Todd’s Fallout games. They are pretty crap, too. New Vegas blows them both out of the water, at least from a story standpoint.

I'm willing to bet more people have heard of him than any of the other programmers you've had except maybe this one. Anyone here who's never had an Atari needs to leave now.

New Vegas blows them both out of the water, at least from a story standpoint. In Oblivion, as your magic skills (restoration, destruction, etc.) level up, spells cost less and less magic to cast; for example, someone with a restoration skill of 10 would need close to a 1,000 magic to cast a powerful restoration spell, but for someone at level 100 in restoration it would only cost around 150 magic to cast (these are rough estimates, but you get the idea). Additionally, with spellcrafting you can create extremely potent offensive spells, like a combination of paralyze, 100% weakness to magic, and 100% weakness to shock, which if used before a shock spell would take down a powerful daedra in only 2 hits.

Maybe I’m thinking of something else because it’s been so long but I swear magic was pretty worthless in Oblivion. It’s certainly one of my big knocks on Skyrim. Skyrim seemed to almost push you into being a sneaky archer and I hated that.

So how about Oblivian in Skryim? They never finish those total conversion mods.

Dan E. Kool - Now I'm picturing a Lord of the Rings scene in which MeleeMonk is there and then the forum members say "You can have my Atari," "And my Master System," "AND MY NES!".
