What's your favorite console that you own a collection for or that you like to collect for?
I'll need to put some thought towards this but I would probably go with 3DS since it's modern making game quality impressive while the library is easy to collect for and games are relatively inexpensive.

Great topic. I like all of them. My Wii collection, my Wii U collection, my 3DS collection, my PS3 collection, my PS4 collection, even my small Switch collection.
They are not real collections, but they are the games I like, and that's what matters to me, and I'm satisfied with all of them.
If I ever get my hands on the NES Classic and the SNES Classic I will love those two. I also like that I'm not finished and I'm still collecting for them.
If I have to choose it would have to be between my Wii collection and my 3DS collection. Probably because they are physical. All my physical copies I bought sealed, and that satisfies me as well.

I love all of my collections, but currently I'm digging the Wii scene. The games are dirt cheap, and many of them are rather fun.

Most of my games are for the Genesis. I like the clamshell cases, I feel a lot of nostalgia for that Genesis sound, but most of all I just dig the community that still exists for the system and that makes it fun to collect games for.
As far as pure collecting goes, my favorite is probably the Master System. I love the box art and (if I have the cash on hand) I'll buy anything for the system, whether I'll play the game or not, just for that sweet box art.
My absolute favorite console though, without question, is the Game Boy. It's region free so you can buy and play games wherever you are, the games aren't as expensive as the home console games, and you can collect the hardware, too, since it came in all kinds of colors and models. The same can be said of the Lynx and Game Gear, but the Game Boy library is way bigger (and I just like it better).

Which version do you like best? Which one would you recommend collecting? The games are dirt cheap, and no one seems to be price gauging even the rarest of the games.

I have always thought about collecting for the Game Boy. Which version do you like best? Which one would you recommend collecting? The games are dirt cheap, and no one seems to be price gauging even the rarest of the games. My personal favorite is my original "brick" DMG model, the one with the green screen, I guess mostly for sentimental reasons but also just because I like the size of it. I don't have a problem with the screen, but most people that I know can't make heads or tails of it, so that's something to be aware of. The Pocket and Color hardware are also unlit, but there are tons of console colors to collect, if you're into that. There was also a special Pocket with a screen which was lit, but it was a Japan exclusive. I'd buy one if I came across one... But it's probably not your best bet as a first Game Boy. If you want to go the handheld route, and you want to be sure you can actually see the screen, you can't do better than the Game Boy Advance SP. It's fully backwards compatible, so the whole Game Boy library is playable - from the OG to the Color games and the Advance games, too, naturally. Look out for the AGS 101 model, which is backlit. The SP that came before the 101 is frontlit and the colors get washed out as a result. Frontlit screens do look better in daylight, though. But if you're not set on playing the games with a handheld, and since you've said you have a Super Nintendo, I'd recommend getting a Super Game Boy. Those are still real cheap and the games look great in color on the TV. The only downside vs the GBA SP is that you're limited to original Game Boy games and some Color games that were backwards compatible (those have a black cartridge). The OG Game Boy library is solid, though, so it's still a good place to start.

Like scipioafricanus , I like the kind of minimalist design that most of them have. They're all very uniform, too, so they go together nicely on a shelf. Sometimes it seems like the designer didn't "get it" and some games don't really fit in. Master of Darkness is an example. Don't get me wrong, it's a very cool cover. It's just not a Master System classic of cover design in my book. I like the ones that keep it super simple, like clip art on graphing paper. I don't even mean that ironically. I just think it looks different and cool. Zillion II is one of my favorite SMS games and the cover is exactly what I want in a Master System box design: Phantasy Star does a good job of blending the beautiful illustration of covers like Master of Darkness with the simplicity of Zillion: But then for pure simplicity, you can't beat Super Tennis: There's just something charming about them to me.

I've always liked the grid design of the Master System box arts. There's something very "retro" and classic-computer-game style about them.
