I got a trial for Amazon Prime today, so I'm going to watch as many CGR recommendations as I can before it expires. Here's what I thought about Gattaca: "This is a solid science fiction movie. The premise is one of those "what would happen if we changed this thing about society" dystopian movies. So the story to me is not inherently the greatest thing ever, but it pulls through by great execution. There are enough twists and turns to keep it interesting all the way through. Some of the ways they use to get out of certain situations are quite clever. I wonder if I should give this a 3/5, but since it ends so well, I will give it a 3.5/5. It is kind of inspiring, and also disturbing as this would be horrifying if it would become reality. Just solid." 3.5/5
EDIT: I see that I almost watched it on the anniversary of this thread. Perhaps I should have waited a couple of days.
I like your review, but I'm wondering what differentiates a 3.5 to a 4.0 for you personally? I guess I'm a bit confused, because in the US, a 70% is "meh" at best.

I like your review, but I'm wondering what differentiates a 3.5 to a 4.0 for you personally? I guess I'm a bit confused, because in the US, a 70% is "meh" at best. My scores comes from my Letterboxd reviews, where I can give everything from 0.5-5 out of 5. I always round up when rating on the Wind Squid Pub, since that way every 2 Letterboxd rating has an unique rating attached to it. To answer the question, a 3.5 and 4.0 are very similar in a sense, but a 4.0 is generally a more well made film. A 3.5 film can be campy as fuck, but be so enjoyable that it deserves a 3.5 rating. A 3.5 rating is not bad at all, in fact it is a quite good movie, but with obvious flaws. A 4.0 movie is a great movie, with some flaws or minor flaws. A 4.0 can also be a fantastic movie, but not one I necessarily care for. Once you get up to 4.5 and 5.0, I must really enjoy them and they must be well made. Ratings are of course relative and highly subjective, but I think a well made movie can be considered to be an objective factor in a sense.
